What must have happened for the first cells to appear? |
|
Definition
1. Living things are made of organic molecules such as amino acids, carbohydrates and fatty acids must have formed. 2. Organic molecules in living organisms are large, so single molecules must have combined to make more complex molecules, such as amino acids joining together to form proteins. 3. All living things reproduce, so molecules must have formed that could replicate themselves. This is the basis of inheritance. 4. Cells have membranes, so the mixture of these molecules must have been enclosed within membrane-bound vesicles. |

What is the endo-symbiotic theory |
|
Definition
The endosymbiotic theory explains how eukaryotic cells could have developed from a simple cell or prokaryote. The theory suggests that some organelles found inside eukaryotes were once free-living prokaryotes. There is evidence to suggest that some prokaryotes were engulfed by larger cells (mitochondria and cytoplasts) |
