standing youth kouros
marble
Votive offering, placed as grave markers. Looks very similar to Egyptian statuary in terms of stance and position. Kouros is nude to suggest the heroic quality of the figure (idealized) very geometric patterning in the body structure unlike the Egyptian sculptures that look much softer. Long hair=nobility/aristocracy. Kouros is entirely freestanding unlike the Egyptian statue

sarcophagus from cervetari
italy terra cotta
Like egyptians, the etruscans were very concerned with the afterlife. Initially cremated the dead, then began to bury them. Husband and wife buried together. Probably wealthy patrons. Suggested that they are perhaps feasting or implied celebration. Reclined at an awkward angle. The top half of the bodies are well articulated but the bottom half is not detailed at all really. Major difference, the woman is presented in a celebration situation. Women are higher status in Etruscan culture. Positive attitude towards the afterlife. Etruscan figures have almond eyes. Possibly originated from asia minor
