Term
Two Point Threshold
Definition
use calipers on different areas of skin to determine minimum distance where patient feels 2 separate points of contact - helps to determine receptor density
Term
Testing Tactale Localization
Definition
measures abillity to determine which portion of the skin has been touched. Tester touches subject with marker, subject tries to touch exact spot with different marker and difference measured in millimeters. Smallest localization = greatest density of receptors
Term
Density and location of touch and temperature receptors
Definition
testing heat, cold, and light touch receptors using a hot and cold probe and a feather. Cold receptors > heat receptors - thermo dense in nose and ears and on face.
Term
adaptation of touch receptors
Definition
duration of feeling a coin on forearm in different places and with adding of coins. Also bending of individual hair - sensation greatest when hair springs back into place
Term
adaptation of temperature receptors
Definition
hands in hot and cold water over 2 minutes - which one adapts fastest? Cold adapts quicker. No sensation of hot or cold when water is near skin temperature.
Term
Referred Pain
Definition
painful stimulus in one place, but pain felt in another. Elbow placed in cold water and sensation and location of sensation recorded over 2 minutes in water and 3 minutes afterwards.
Term
blind spot
Definition
area of optic disc where there are no photoreceptors
Term
accomodation
Definition
see far and near
Term
myopia
Definition
light focuses in front of retina
Term
hyperopia
Definition
light focuses behind the retina
Term
real image
Definition
image formed on retina is mirror image and upside down and smaller than object
Term
astigmatism
Definition
irregularities of curvature of cornea or lens - tested with an astigmatism testing chart - which lines look darker or distorted indicates astigmatism
Term
near point of accomadation
Definition
move pin held at arms length in slowly for each eye - area where it becomes distorted is near point of accomodation
Term
Color blindness
Definition
deficiencies in the cones of color photorecepotor cells - blue, green, or red. Ishihara's Color Plates used.
Term
photopupillary reflex
Definition
protection of retinal by constricting of pupil by circular muscle of iris
Term
accomodation reflex
Definition
pupil constricts as subject accomodates
Term
Convergence
Definition
eyes converge in order to foveate on near object
Term
Hearing acuity test
Definition
pack 1 ear - ticking clock near unpacked ear - record distance when subject can't hear it anymore
Term
sound localization
Definition
subject closes eyes, pocket watch audible distance - check front back sides and above. See if they can locate it accurately
Term
frequency range
Definition
test tuning forks of different frequencies
Term
Weber test
Definition
determines conductive and sensoreineural deafness - strike fork and put on top of head in center - equally heard? - sensoreineurla deafness indicated in 1 ear if tone is not heard in that ear. Conduction deafness indicated if sound is heard more stongly in the ear with conduction deafness.
Term
Rinne test
Definition
bone vs air-conduction hearing - strike and hold tuning forks next to ear and on mastoid process.
Term
balance test
Definition
walk straight line, pick up coins
Term
Romberg Test
Definition
determines integrity of dorsal white column of spinal cord - sends impluses from proprioceptors to brain. Draw line on board. Subject stands with back to blackboard, eyes open, swaying? Eyes closed, swaying? Open and closed with left arm up, swaying?
Term
role of vision in equilibrium
Definition
raise right or left foot, eyes open 1-2 minutes. Do again with eyes closed. Observe.
Term
olfactory adaptation
Definition
cotton with oils on them - stuff nose and record time til the smell not noticed anymore.
