Term
5 Functions of the Respiratory System |
|
Definition
1. Provide area for gas exchange between air and blood. 2. Move air to and from exchange surfaces. 3. Protect respiratory surfaces from enviornmental variables and invasion by pathogens. 4. Permit vocal communication 5. Provide olfactory sensation to the CNS. |

Term
Factors that influence hemoglobin saturation |
|
Definition
1. The PO2 of blood - high partial pressure allows more gas molecules to move. 2. The Blood pH - increases in hydrogen ion concentration (acidic) weakens the strength of the hemoglobin-oxygen bond. 3. Temperature of blood - Increased temperature less oxygen binds and unloading of oxygen from hemoglobin increases. 4. Metabloic activity within RBCs - involved in glycosis, generates a compound caled 2, 3 bisphosphoglycerate or BPG, which causes more oxygen to be released. |

|
Term
Physical factors that influence ventilation |
|
Definition
1. Respiratory resistance- friction/drag in air passageway 2. Lung compliance- expandalibity of the lungs. 3. Lung elasticity- ability of lungs to recoil. 4. Alveolar surface tension- liquid reduces surface tension (Surfactant- reduces tension, allowing alveoli to fill with air) |
