Term
viscosity
Definition
measure of oil's ability to pour
Term
battery cell
Definition
two metal electrodes, separate from each other, immersed within an electrolyte containing both positive and negative ions
Term
electrolyte
Definition
sulfuric acid and water solution in battery
Term
cold cranking rating
Definition
measurement of cranking amperes that a battery can deliver over a period of 30 seconds at 0 F and still maintain a voltage of 1.2 V
Term
parasitic load
Definition
normal electrical load from the ECM, radio, and other electrical components placed on a vehicle's battery when the engine is not operating
Term
fuel
Definition
combustible substance that is burned in an engine to impart motion to the engine pistons
Term
hydrocarbons
Definition
HC; combination of hydrogen and carbon atoms; all petroleum-based fuels consist of these
Term
engine ping
Definition
also called knocking or detonation; condition, accompanied by audible noise, occurring when gasoline in cylinders burns too quickly
Term
ALDL
Definition
Assembly Line Diagnostic Link
Term
ambient temperature
Definition
temperature of air surrounding an object
Term
ballast resistor
Definition
resistor constructed of special type wire, properties of which tend to increase or decrease voltage in direct proportion to heat of wire
Term
flash point
Definition
the point in the temperature range at which a given fuel or lubricant will ignite and flash into flame
Term
fusible link
Definition
a special wire inserted into a circuit to provide protection in event of overloading or short circuits; overloads will melt wire and break circuit; unlike a regular fuse, fusible link will permit overloading for a short time before melting
Term
knock sensor
Definition
sensor which allows the ECM to retard ignition timing when spark knock occurs
Term
maintenance indicator light
Definition
MIL; instrument panel light that illuminates to indicate a malfunction in the computer control system; used on both OBD I and OBD II systems
Term
Pascal's law
Definition
"When pressure is exerted on confined liquid, it is transmitted undiminished."
Term
pickup coil
Definition
device in electronic distributor that senses engine speed from distributor rotation and sends electrical pulses to control unit
Term
positive crankcase ventilation system
Definition
PCV; system that prevents crankcase vapors from being discharged directly into atmosphere
Term
rectifier
Definition
diode; electrical device that allows current to flow in one direction but blocks current flow in the other direction; used to change alternating current from the alternator int direct current; widely used in electronic components
Term
secondary wires
Definition
high-voltage wire from coil to distributor central tower and from outer towers to spark plug
Term
short circuit
Definition
refers to some "hot" portion of the electrical circuit that has become grounded; wire touching a ground and providing a completed circuit to the battery
Term
shunt
Definition
an alternate or bypass portion of an electrical circuit
Term
air-fuel ratio
Definition
ratio by weight between air and gasoline in the fuel mixture
Term
air injection system
Definition
an emission control system used to lower levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Accomplished by injecting a stream of air into exhaust stream near exhaust valve
Term
BDC
Definition
Bottom Dead Center
Term
wide open throttle switch
Definition
sensor used for the kick-down function on automatic transmissions
Term
wedge chamber
Definition
combustion chamber having a wedge shape
Term
manifold absolute pressure sensor
Definition
MAP; a sensing device that determines intake manifold pressure as a factor of engine speed and load changes. Sensor sends appropriate electrical signals to and ECM and ECM adjusts engine settings accordingly
Term
wet compression test
Definition
test used to indicate if low cylinder pressures are caused by worn piston rings only. The test is done exactly the same as the “dry” test, however a small amount of engine oil (about 1-2 teaspoons) is added into the cylinder to create temporarily seal (to prevent possible blow-by). If compression rises significantly afterwards, then worn piston rings are the culprit.
Term
blow-by
Definition
the escape of exhaust gases past piston rings
Term
camshaft position sensor
Definition
a magnetic or Hall effect switch that senda signal to the ECM as the camshaft rotates. The ECM uses this signal to determine camshaft position
Term
brake horsepower
Definition
bhp; measurement of actual usable horsepower deliver at crankshaft; commonly computed on an engine on a chassis dynamometer
Term
BTDC
Definition
Before Top Dead Center
Term
waste gate
Definition
device installed in the turbocharger to keep the turbocharger from developing too much pressure
Term
reluctor
Definition
a component in some electronic ignition distributors, affixed to the distributor shaft and triggers magnetic pickup; the signal from the pickup triggers the electronic control device to break the coil primary circuit causing coil to fire
Term
CFM
Definition
cubic feet per minute; a measure of airflow
Term
charcoal canister
Definition
emission control device containing activated charcoal granules; used to store gasoline vapors from system; when engine is started, stored vapors are drawn into engine and burned
Term
crankshaft position sensor
Definition
a magnetic or Hall effect switch that sends a signal to the ECM as the crankshaft rotates; the ECM uses this signal to determine crankshaft and piston position, as well as engine RPM
