OEAS and Airframes peculiar equipment
Term
What is an oxygen concentrator?
Definition
A self contained unit that is capable of providing the breathing requirements for an individual at altitudes up to 50,000 feet
Term
How does an oxygen concentrator provide air to the aircrew?
Definition
It extracts undesirable gases from engine bleed air and provides a continuous high concentration of oxygen enriched gas
Term
Where is an oxygen concentrator normally located?
Definition
In the same space occupied by the LOX converter
Term
Of what 7 components is the oxygen concentrator composed?
Definition
  1. Molecular sieve beds
  2. Rotary valve assembly
  3. Electronic assembly
  4. Pressure reducer
  5. Air heater
  6. Plenum assembly
  7. Inlet filter assembly
Term
What is the purpose of the molecular sieve beds?
Definition
They absorb nitrogen molecules through molecular bonding as engine bleed air passes through them.
Term
What absorbs the nitrogen in molecular sieve beds?
Definition
Crystalline alumina-silicate pellets
Term
How are molecular sieve beds purged?
Definition
They are purged in alternate cycles in which nitrogen is dissipated and vented overboard
Term
What component of the oxygen concentrator in OBOGS consists of a direct current motor driven valve, which rotates on a timed basis in order to cause alternate absoption and de-absorption cycles in the sieve beds?
Definition
The rotary valve assembly
Term
What component of the oxygen concentrator in OBOGS controls the temperature of the heater asembly and controls timing of the Rotary Valve assembly?
Definition
The Electronic Assembly
Term
What is the purpose of the pressure reducer in the OBOGS oxygen concentrator?
Definition
It controls the pressure of air entering the Molecular Sieve Beds
Term
What component of the oxygen concentrator in OBOGS heats air as necessary to maintain minimum temperatures?
Definition
The Air Heater Assembly
Term
What is the purpose of the Plenum Assembly in the OBOGS oxygen concentrator?
Definition
It stores oxygen rich gas produced by the Molecular Sieve Beds
Term
What is the purpose of the Inlet Filter Assembly in the OBOGS oxygen concentrator?
Definition
It removes water and particulate matter from inlet engine bleed air
Term
What component of OBOGS senses partial pressure of the product breathing gas and provides a warning signal through the aircraft's WARNING/CAUTION/ADVISORY system if the oxygen concentration falls below limitations?
Definition
The Oxygen Monitor
Term
Where is the Oxygen Monitor in OBOGS mounted?
Definition
In the cockpit
Term
Of what 3 items does the oxygen monitor in OBOGS consist?
Definition
  1. Aneroid Assembly
  2. Aneroid Valve and Filter Assembly
  3. Oxygen Sensor
Term
What is the purpose of the Aneroid Assembly in the Oxygen Monitor of OBOGS?
Definition
It senses the change in air pressure resulting from changes in altitude
Term
What is the purpose of the Aneroid Valve and Filter Assembly in the Oxygen Monitor of OBOGS?
Definition
It controls pressure in the oxygen sensor chamber in order to prevent false low partial oxygen (O2) warnings
Term
What component of the OBOGS Oxygen Monitor is a polar-graphic oxygen sensor, which detects O2 while being insensitive to other gases?
Definition

The Oxygen Sensor

(hot damn!)

Term
How does the Oxygen Sensor in the OBOGS Oxygen Monitor show when O2 falls below minimum requirements?
Definition
Electrical current is produced by the sensor, activating a warning light
Term
What component of OBOGS is mounted by a quick-diconnect attachment to the parachute harness?
Definition
The Oxygen Regulator
Term
Of what type is the OBOGS oxygen regulator?
Definition
It is an automatic pressure breathing type, which provides breathing oxygen to the aircrew's face mask on demand
Term
To whom is the OBOGS oxygen regulator issued?
Definition
It is issued to the aircrew
Term
What are the 2 system controls for the OBOGS?
Definition
  1. OBOGS Control Switch
  2. Oxygen (OXY) FLOW Control Valve
Term
Who operates the OBOGS control switch and control valve? Where are they located, and how are they labeled?
Definition
They are operated by the pilot. They are located on the OBOGS control panel assembly, and each has two positions, ON and OFF.
Term
From what does the OBOGS receive air once it is turned on?
Definition
The air conditioning system
Term
Describe the process by which nitrogen is removed from the air by the OBOGS
Definition
The air from the air conditioning system passes over the sieve beds, which absorb the nitrogen and allow the oxygen and other gases to pass through. There are two sieve beds, so while one is working, the other is releasing the nitrogen overboard. This allows continuous flow to the plenum assembly.
Term
Describe what happens to the air in OBOGS after it passes over the sieve beds
Definition
The air flows to the plenum assembly, which acts as a heat exchanger to cool the oxygen to approximately cockpit temperature. The oxygen then flows through the regulator to the pilot's mask.
Term
Where is an emergency oxygen cylinder stored?
Definition
In the survival kit.
Term
How is the emergency oxygen supply activated manually?
Definition
By pulling on the manual emergency oxygen control (green ring)
Term
When is the emergency oxygen system activated automatically?
Definition
Upon ejection
Term
What is the check valve on the emergency oxygen system for?
Definition
It prevents loss of oxygen pressure to the OBOGS when emergency oxygen is activated
Term
To what 3 actions is O-level maintenance on OBOGS limited?
Definition
  1. Visual Inspections
  2. Special Inspections
  3. Removal/replacement of defective system components
Term
What shall be done with oxygen concentrators that do not pass inspection?
Definition
They shall be removed and replaced with an RFI (Ready-For-Issue) oxygen concentrator
