Protestation of Guiltlessness
Definition
Once the ka, ba, name, shadow, and body were preserved, the soul of the dead person, according to the Egyptians, would have to go to the underworld and go through a trial. The soul would be judged by Osiris, along with several other gods. At this point, the soul would recite the Protestation of Guiltlessness, which is a long list of sins that the soul would claim never to have committed. After the protestation, the god Anubis would weigh the heart of the dead soul against the feather of Ma'at. If the soul was telling the truth, the heart would not be weighed down with guilt, and it would be lighter than the feather. In this case, the soul got to go to the good afterlife.
