Definition
- Production system based on forages. The cow is used to convert low quality forage into products (makes it efficient)
- Use bulls instead of A.I. (>90% of the time)
- Selection Goals: fertility, weaning wt. (milk is largest factor in w wt.), cow efficiency, adaptability, quality product produced efficiently, efficiency based on lbs. produced per cow
- Genetics of beef production are blended (lack uniformity)(Ex. Steaks different grades)

- Growing Phase after calves are weaned and before feedlot (both heifers and steers)
- Roughage based diets (available forage) – wheat pasture, improved pasture, silage (cheap gain)
- Compensatory Gain: animal grows faster because they’re making up for lost (malnuritioushed) time

- Animals confined and fed high energy (concentrate) diet – corn or milo.
- Profit potential: ADG, feed efficiency, health – death loss
- Major feedings areas: Texas Panhandle, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, & corn belt states
- Factors influencing value: quality, yield, dressing percent
