Describe Nathan Price's last years in the Congo (what rumors does Leah hear)? Explain how and why he dies. |
|
Definition
Nathan Price has pretty much gone insane. He has grown a long white beard, which all three of the daughters are surprised about. He is still headstrong in his ideas on baptism. One day he decides to take a boat out with a lot of children where he will baptize them. The boat gets turned over by a crocodile where the majority of the children are eaten or drown. Nathan runs away, all the way up a watchtower which is then set on fire and he dies in the fire |

How does the phrase "carry us, marry us, ferry us, bury us" relate to the Prices' exodus from Africa? |
|
Definition
When the price family leaves africa, adah and orleanna are "carried" on a plane back to the USA. Anatole carries Leah and takes care of her when she's sick. Rachel marries Eeben Axelroot and Leah eventually marries Anatole. Adah and Orleanna have to take a ferry before returning to the USA. Ruth May must be buried once she is eaten by the snake. |

What are Orleanna's occupations once she arrives back in the US? How and where does she spend her retirement? Give specific details to support. |
|
Definition
To start off, Orleanna lives in Atlanta for a little while where she hleps out with civil rights and becomes an active member in the community. She and Adah spend a lot of time together at this point because Adah attends college in Atlanta. Orleanna decides to move on from the "civil rights scene"and moves to Sanderling Island, GA where she embraces retirement. In the beginning of the book, it is said taht Orleanna was a nature worshipper before marrying Nathan--she now returns to this way of life. She spends a lot of time gardening and taking walks down the beach. |

In later years, what news does Leah have of any of their former neighbors from Kilanga? You might consider Nelson, Pascal, Tata Kuvundu, Tata Ndu and his sons, and/or Mama Mwanza. Describe at least three. |
|
Definition
Many of the Price's former neighbors in the Kilanga have died. Nelson did not die, he is married. Pascal, Leah's childhood friend dies which Leah is very upset about. When Leah informs Raachel about the death of Pascal, Rachel is very insensitive to Leah and thinks she is talking about her son. Tata Kuvundu is no longer in power, as he lost a lot of respect when people found out that he was the one who caused the death of Ruth may |

Describe some of the problems with the political situation in Africa: what are some of the porblems that Leah and Anatole encounter? What examples does the reader have of Mobutu's character and reign? |
|
Definition
Leah and Anatole are 2 people that stand against the government. Anatole stands up for nonviolence, peace, and he continues to teach. Many times throughout the latter part of the novel, Anatole gets arrested and Leah is forced to fend for herself and her children which is a difficult task. Anatole's passport gets confiscated. The cause for all the problems is the desire of the Americans and the Ruopeans to control Africa, without letting Africa having a say in what they want. Anatole fights for independence. Leah and Anatole try moving to America, but Anatole is made fun of there. They then return to AFrica where Anatole is a "wanted man" (not in a good way) so they are constantly fighting the battle of finding a place to belong. MObutu is a very insensitive man. He will spend millioins of dollars to sponsor a boxing match but he will not even pay the native workers. He is selfish and he does not realize the gravity of possibly losing independence. |
