Term
Describe the characteristics of the troposphere, tropopause, and stratosphere.
Definition
troposphere- surface through 55,000 ft over equator and 28,000 ft over poles-- where most weather occurs

tropopause is a transition zone between the troposphere and stratosphere-- the temperature in this zone is isothermal-- the jet stream is right below the tropopause

the stratosphere is characterized by increasing temperature with increasing altitude-- there is a general lack of weather, the air is thin, and this makes for excellent flying
Term
Describe the flight conditions associated with troposphere, tropopause, and stratosphere.
Definition
Term
Define a lapse rate.
Definition
the linear decrease in temperature as altitude increases until the isothermal layer/tropopause is reached
Term
State the average lapse rate in degrees Celsius.
Definition
2*C per 1000 ft
Term
Define atmospheric pressure.
Definition
the weight of a column of air on given space
Term
State the standard units of pressure measurement.
Definition
millibars (mb) and inches of Mercury inHg
Term
Define the standard atmosphere to include temperature and pressure.
Definition
the standard atmosphere at sea level has a pressure of 29.
Term
Differentiate between sea level pressure and station pressure.
Definition
Term
Define indicated altitude, calibrated altitude, MSL altitude, AGL altitude, pressure altitude, and density altitude.
Definition
Term
Describe the effects of pressure changes on aircraft altimeters.
Definition
Term
State the effects of temperature deviations from the standard lapse rate on aircraft altimeters.
