Definition
Taft and Knox came up with it to futher foreign policy in the U.S. in 1909-1913 under the Roosevelt Corollary. It was meant to avoid military intervention by giving foreign countries monetary aid.

Definition
Devised by President Wilson, it reflected the power of large countries. Although comprised of delegates from every country, it was designed to be run by a council of the five greatest countries. It also included a provision for a world court.

Definition
Americans feared Communism after WW1. In January, 1920 Palmer raids in 33 cities broke into meeting halls and homes without warrants. 4,000 "communists" were jailed, or deported.

Definition
1916- Attacked Columbus, New Mexico and Pershing was directed to follow him into Mexico. Pershing met with resistance and eventually left without finding Pancho Villa.

Brought forth under the Wilson administration, stated that any treacherous act or draft dodging was forbidden, outlawed disgracing the government, the Constitution, or military uniforms, and forbade aiding the enemy.

WW1 brought an influenza epidemic from Europe and had spread to the U.S. killing more than half a million Americans. The emotional turmoil had disturbing political effects, as wartime patriotism turned to hated of Germans. Celebrated all things American while attacking all ideas, and people, viewed as foreign or anti-American.

Definition
A war bond that was sold in the U.S. to support the allied cause in in WW1. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty in the U.S. and introduced the idea of financial securities to many citizens for the first time.

Definition
A major racial conflict that began in Chicago, Illinois. Dozens died and hundreds wer injured. It is considered the worst of the approximate 25 riots during the Red Summer of 1919, so named because of the violence and fatalities across the nation due to the red scare.

A progressive writer and public intellectural born in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and a graduate of Columbia University. Bourne is best known for is essays, especially his unfinished work "The State" discovered after his death.
