Term
Hypoxia
Definition
•Lack of sufficient oxygen in the body to the point where function is impaired
Term
Hypoxic Hypoxia
Definition
•Partial pressure of oxygen is insufficient
oYou cannot absorb adequate oxygen
•Correction: breathe a greater percentage of oxygen or oxygen under pressure
oOxygen systems vary in what they deliver
oDescend to higher barometric pressures
Term
Hypemic Hypoxia
Definition
•The oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood is reduced
oCarbon Monoxide interferes with oxygen binding to the blood
Smoking, engine exhaust
Term
Histotoxic Hypoxia
Definition
•Tissue cells are poisoned and unable to use oxygen
oAlcohol
oCyanide
Term
Stagnant Hypoxia
Definition
•Oxygen deficiency due to impaired circulation
oG forces from maneuvers
oPositive pressure breathing for extended periods
oDisease of the blood vessels
Term

Term
ffective Performance Time (EPT)
Definition
o Amount of time from loss of adequate oxygen partial pressure in which an individual can perform effectively
Term
Hyperventilation
Definition
•Respiration that is too rapid and/or deep for current physical activity
oresults in a abnormal loss of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the blood
• Causes
o Emotional tension or stress
o Fear or anxiety
o Pain
o Pressure breathing equipment
• Dizziness
• Hot & / or cold sensations
• Tingling of hand, legs, or feet
• Muscle spasms
• Nausea
• Sleepiness
• Unconsciousness
Term
Decompression Sickness
Definition
• Symptoms caused by nitrogen gas coming out of solution in your body.
o Bubbles are formed
o Bubbles can cause pain or disability due to hypoxia
• Diagnosis
o Pressure loss, recent SCUBA diving
o Joint pain, chest pain, cyanosis, or any symptom of brain dysfunction
• Treatment
o 100% oxygen, tight fitting mask
o Re-pressurize by descent or pressure chamber
Term
Ear Block
Definition
• Eardrum flexes causing pain
o Head colds & infections can block Eustachian tube (more common on descent)
• Remedy
o swallow, yawn, tense throat, valsalva, nasal inhalant
Term
Sinus Block
Definition
• Pressure occurs the same way as in the ears
o Pain is felt on sides of nose, upper jaw, above eyes
o Occurs more commonly on descent

• Remedy
o Valsalva maneuver
o Nasal sprays can be used only to help with descent…DO NOT USE PRIOR TO FLIGHT!
Term
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Definition
• Colorless, odorless and tasteless gas
• Contained in exhaust fumes
• Your blood is unable to carry oxygen because it is saturated with Carbon Monoxide
o Carbon Monoxide is absorbed more rapidly than oxygen
• Causes
o Leaky heater
o Smoking
o Smoke from a fire

• Symptoms
o Uneasy feeling rather than euphoria
o Mental confusion
o Dizziness
o Light-headedness
o Headaches
Term
Spatial Orientation
Definition
• Vision normally provides the majority of information of our orientation.
• Without the ear and ‘position sense’ information, we would be unable to orient ourselves in darkness
Term
Spatial Disorientation
Definition
• The state of confusion due to misleading information being sent to the brain from the various sensory organs, resulting in a lack of awareness of the aircraft's position in relation to a specific point
