Term
What are characteristics of animals?
Definition

-Multicellular eukaryotes

-Specialization of cells

-Heterotrophs

-Most are capable of locomotion at some time in their life cycle

-Cephalization

-Sexual reproduction

Term
Plants are?
Definition
multicellur eukaryotic autotrophs (produces)
Term
Dorsal
Definition
back side
Term
anterior
Definition
that part which goes first
Term
Ventral
Definition
belly side
Term
posterior
Definition
The part which follows (tail)
Term
Medial
Definition
Toward the mid-line
Term
Lateral
Definition
Away from mid-line (to the side)
Term
Most animals are..
Definition
Bilaterally symmetrical
Term
A few animals are...
Definition
Radially symmetrical- sessile or free floating like jellyfish
Term
Sagittal
Definition
Section resulting from a plain that divides the body in to left and right.
Term
Frontal
Definition
Section resulting from a plane that divides the body into dorsal and ventral portions.
Term
Transverse
Definition
Section resulting from a plane that divides body or structure into top and bottom
Term
Invertebrates
Definition
Great majority of them are marine 95%
Term
Vertebrates
Definition
Are most visible animals 5%
Term
Phylum Porifera
Definition
Sponges; mainly marine-feed on plankton
Body plan- sac with holes
Some are radially symmetrical but most are assymetrical (irregular shape)
Adult is sessile- larval stage is flagellated and able to swim about
Do not from definite tissues ( lack true tissue)
Water enters through pores --->spongocoel--->osculum(used only as exit)
Water is kept circulating by collar cells or choancytes
Term
3 kinds of cells in Porifera
Definition
-Choanocytes-(collar cells)- have a sticky collar of microvilli that surrounds a flagella (eat bacteria, dinoflagellates or plankton)
-amoebocytes- between collar cells and epidermal cells
-Epidermal cells on sponge exterior and is capable of contraction
Term
Phylum Cnidaria
Definition
Mostly martine
-all have cnidocytes ( stinging cells)
-inside cnidocytes are organelles called nematocytes ( thread capsules)
-when cnidocile -a trigger is touched or stimulated by chemicals, the nematocyte is released
-radially symmetrical
-mouth/anus with tentacles surrounding it; leads to GVC, only one opening leads into gvc
-definite tissue- epidermis and gastrodermis
-nerve net
-2 body shapes: polyl- sessile
Medusa- jelly fish form: free swimming
Term
3 of cnidaria
Definition
-hydrozoa- most members have both polyp and medusa
a. Hydra- polyp only reproduce by buds
b. Physalia- both polyp and medusa
c. Obelia- alternate between sexual and asexual generations
2. Scyphozoa- marine jellyfish, mostly medusa- polyp restricted to larval stage in coastal waters jelly fish in open ocean lack the polyp stage
3. Anthozoa- sea anemones, corals (polyp prominent; no Medusa) many derive nourishment from photosynthetic endosymbiotic dinoflagellates
