According to Thomas Aquinas, what are the "5 proofs of God"? |
|
Definition
1) Some things are in motion and anything that is moved is moved by something else. Therefore, there must be a First Mover.
2) Nothing is caused by itself. There cannot be an infinite regress of causes. There must be a First Cause.
3) Every contingent thing at some time fails to exist. If everything was contingent, at some point there would have been nothing. If there was nothing then, there would be nothing now. This is not true, so there must be a Necessary Being.
4) Some beings are greater than others. Great things get their greatness from that which is the greatest. There is a Greatest Being.
5) Many things that lack intelligence act for some end. whatever acts for an end must be directed by an intelligent being. The world must have an Intelligent Being. |
