Significance:
- The most wealthy of the olegarchy ruling Florence, the Medici, who commissioned the building, wanted a grandiose architectural piece that still obeyed Franciscan grandiosity laws.
- Arches were appropriated from Roman architecture.
- Continuity, pattern, and clarity are emphasized.
- The use of 2 different colors of stone was a subtle decoration.
- In the interior courtyard- columns plced around the opening of the courtyard, including corners created an optical illusion.

- Inspired by the struggle of David against Goliath -wits/intelligence vs. strength -meant to represent Florence in a war against Milan, which they eventually won.
- The first free standing male nude sculpture since the Classical period
- Smooth texture vs. the detailed head at the bottom shows contrast b/w the characters depicted.
- Youth, disturbed innocence, cockiness, homo-eroticism.

- The narrative highlights the simplicity of the lives of Jesus and his Apostles

- The one-point perspective is highlighted by the addition of the building to the right- foreshortening of the figures is also used.
- In Italy, tempera was used in addition to frescoes vs. oil in Northern areas of Europe during the Renaissance.
