VMC – What is it?
In what airspace are you NOT required to contact ATC when flying VMC? |
Definition
VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions) is a flight category in which visual flight rules (VFR) flight is permitted—that is, conditions in which pilots have sufficient visibility to fly the aircraft maintaining visual separation from terrain and other aircraft.
NOT required to contact ATC when flying VMC in TRSAs (Terminal Radar Service Areas) |
Term
TRSAs – How are they indicated on a sectional?
What are they?
Where would you find one?
Who must use them? |
Definition
Shown with a gray line.
TRSAs (Terminal Radar Service Areas) are located around busier Class C or D airports and provide Basic Radar Service, and the same radar services to IFR and participating VFR traffic as you’d find in Class C airspace, i.e. Sequencing of all aircraft, Separation from all IFR aircraft.
Contact with ATC is optional for VFR in VMC. |
Term
Class C Basic Radar Service provide (for VFR aircraft) the following 5 things... |
Definition
Safety alerts
Traffic advisories
Limited radar vectoring
Sequencing of all aircraft (specific to Classes Bravo and Charlie)
Separation from all IFR aircraft, with 500 feet vertical separation (specific to Class Charlie) |
Term
Class C clearance out of the airspace before taxiing, is requested from whom? |
Definition
Clearance Delivery (though it’s sometimes combined with ground control). |
Term
Class B airspace – What’s required to enter? What’s provided by ATC? |
Definition
Must have clearance to enter ATC provides: Sequencing of all aircraft, and Separation from ALL aircraft (even other VFR aircraft) |
Term
UNICOM – What is it? What is it for? |
Definition
(Universal communications) station is an air-ground communication facility operated by a non-air traffic control private agency to provide advisory service at uncontrolled airports and to provide various non-flight services (such as requesting a taxi) |
Term
CTAF – What does it stand for? At what airports might you find them? |
Definition
Common Traffic Advisory Frequency Found at non towered APs, or towered APs when not in operation. |
Term
Asterisk next to the frequency for an AP control tower – What does it mean? |
Definition
Control tower operation is part time only |
Term
A “C” to the right of the frequency for an AP control tower – What does it mean? |
Definition
That same frequency is also the CTAF when the tower is not in operation. |
Term
If a control tower and FSS are located at the same AP, ____ is provided by the FSS when the tower is closed (or if there’s no tower at all)?
What’s entailed in that function? |
Definition
Airport Advisory Service –
These provide automated weather reporting with voice broadcasting, a continuous ASOS/AWOS data display, etc |
Term
Correct method of stating 10,500’ MSL to ATC? |
Definition
One zero thousand, five hundred |

Term
ATIS stands for?
What type of information is broadcast / NOT broadcast?
Where would you find an ATIS? |
Definition
Automatic Terminal Information Services
Wind / Sky / Visibility, etc, but all NON-control information (no directions re operation of your aircraft)
“Selected high activity terminals” |
Term
ATIS is missing Sky condition and Visibility – This means what? |
Definition
Ceiling is at least 5,000’, and Visibility is at least 5 miles |
Term
When contacting an FSS facility, the term used (after the name of the AP) that references an FSS is ___? |
Definition
“Radio” as in “McAlister Radio” |
Term
When ATC issues radar traffic info w/ a 12-hour clock, the reference the controller uses is the aircraft’s ___ (direction of travel)? |
Definition
Ground track (their radar display, and not the plane’s true course, or magnetic heading) |
Term
Inbound traffic to an uncontrolled AP should monitor radio traffic from a distance of how many miles? |
Definition

UNICOM –
What is it?
What is it for?
Two things to know about them. |
Definition
(Universal communications) station is an air-ground communication facility operated by a non-ATC private agency to provide advisory service at uncontrolled airports, to provide various non-flight services (such as requesting a taxi), but has NO role in providing traffic info.
NOT the same as CTAF, even though they generally share the same frequency (unless noted otherwise). |

Term
Airport Advisory Area – What is it?
How is one shown on a chart? |
Definition
It’s the area w/in a 10-mile radius of an AP, where the control tower is not in operation, but there IS an FSS
The FSS provides non-controlling information, such as AP advisories, planes in the pattern, wind direction, landing runways etc.
Shown on a sectional with: A dashed magenta line around the AP with about a 4 mile radius (same radius as a class D AP) |
