Definition
was a decision by the United States Supreme Court, which held that a State may, over the suspect's protest, have a physician extract blood from a person suspected of drunken driving without violating the suspect's Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution rights. Did not compel him to be a witness against himself

Definition
The U.S. Supreme Court established a "bright line" rules to govern custodial interrogation. Was not told the he could have a autorney, but signed his confession that stated "with full knowledge of my legal right, understanding any statement I make may be used against me". This is how Miranda rights came about.

Definition
a decision of the United States Supreme Court which ruled that, in the case of a person stopped for a misdemeanor traffic offense, once they are in custody, the protections of the Fifth Amendment apply to them. Previously, some courts had been applying Miranda only to more serious offenses

Brewer v. Williams
Definition
Once judicial proceedings begin, the Sixth Amendment dictates that a suspect has the right to counsel. Here, the officer exploited the suspect’s deep religious convictions to obtain an incriminating statement in violation of the suspect’s Sixth Amendment right to counsel. The Davenport judge arraigned Williams on his outstanding arrest warrant, thus judicial proceedings were underway. Despite Williams’ insistence on his right to counsel, the officer obtained incriminating statements without informing Williams of his right to have counsel present and his ability to waive that right.

Definition
It first stated that under the qualified immunity doctrine, an official cannot be found to have violated rights of which he could not have known. The court then engaged in a lengthy discussion of whether a due process right to affirmative protection was clearly established at the time of Ms. Pinder's dealings with Officer Johnson, concluding that such a right was not established. The court then explains why such a right should not be established.
