Term
Clincal Crown
Definition
The part of a tooth which is visible in the mouth
Term
Clinical Root
Definition
The part which is not visible in the mouth
Term
Enamel
Definition
A very hard, whitish, translucent tooth tissue that covers and defines the anatomical crown.
Term
Cementum
Definition
Covers and defines the anantomical root
Term
Anatomical root
Definition

Part of the tooth that is covered with cementum and connects the tooth to the surronding tissue.

Term
Cervical line
Definition
The boundary between the enamel (anatomical crown) and the cementum(anatomical root).
Term
Eruption
Definition
The movement of the tooth through the surrounding tissues so that gradually more of the tooth becomes visible
Term
Dentition
Definition
Full set of teeth
Term
Four groups of teeth
Definition

1. Incisors

2. Canines

3. Pre-molars

4. Molars

Term
Insicors
Definition

Have crowns with relatively straight edges, which are well designed to cut through foods.

There are 8

Term
Incisal Edges
Definition
Cutting edges
Term
Canines
Definition

Known also as cuspids (one cusp) and eye teeth

There are 4

have an incisal edge or cusp that is convex meaning that it bulges awat from the root.

The overall crown and root length of canines make them the longest teeth in the adult's mouth

the long root gives it stability

Canine teeth have a major influence on a person's facial apperance

Term
Canines and Incisors
Definition

Both have incisal edges

the canine has a peircing edge

the incisor has a cutting edge

both are wedge shaped in apperance from a side view of their crowns

Term
Pre-Molars
Definition

There are 8 pre-molars

They are called pre-molars b/c they come before the molars

Sometimes called bi-cuspid due to them having two cusps.

Bi-cuspid isnt very accurate b/c most pre-molars can have two or three cuspids

Term
Pre-Molars and Molars
Definition

Have larger masticating surfaces then the incisors and canines.

Facilitate the crushing and grinding of foods.

Term
Pre-Molars and Canines
Definition

Have similar characteristics

Pre-Molar cusps resemble the cusps on the canine teeth.

Term
Pre-Molars and Molars
Definition

they have similarities, but they differ in the amount of cusps, their form, and arrangement.

Premolars have smaller mastication surfaces, and more pointed cusps, which concentrate the forces exerted on foods.

Term
Molars
Definition
There are 12
Term
Maxilla
Definition
The upper bone of the mouth
Term
Maxillary Teeth
Definition

the teeth that belong in the upper arch

also called the upper teeth

there are 16 maxillary teeth

Term
Maxillary teeth
Definition

The teeth that are supported by the upper arch (maxilla)

They account for half of the number of teeth

known as upper set of teeth

Term
Mandible
Definition

the lower jaw

the set of teeth attached to the mandible make up the mandibular arch

moveable jaw used for chewing

Term
Anterior teeth
Definition

Incisors and Canines

Have masticating surfaces called incisal edges

Term
Posterior Teeth
Definition

Pre-Molars and Molars

occlusal surface (grind together when the mouth is closed)

masticating surfaces are occlusal

Term

Occlusal

Definition

the grinding and chewing surfaces of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth come into contact when the mouth is closed.

Molars and pre-molars have occulsal surfaces

Term
Midsaggital Plane
Definition
the dividing line between the right and left sides of the body.
Term
Midline (midsaggital)
Definition

The midline or median line of the dental arches

Equally divides the maxillary and mandibular arches, falling between the central incisors

Term
Quadrants
Definition

Each quadrant has an equal set of 8 teeth

there are 4 quadrants

The right and left quadrants are in refrence to the patients right or left, not in refrence to viewers right or left

Term
Heterodont Dentition
Definition
Different teeth of different shapes
Term
Homodont Dentition
Definition
Only one type of tooth is found throught the arches
Term
Diphyodont
Definition
To produce two set of teeth
Term

Primary (decidious)

or

Primary dentition

Definition

Means falling away and refers to the fact that when their functions have been fulfilled they will fall away.

A complete set of primary dentition consists of only 20 teeth, so each arch only contains 10 teeth

There are 6 less teeth in an arch of primary dentition than in the same arch of the permanent dentition.

Term
Permanet teeth
Definition
teeth you have for a lifetime
Term
Polyphyodont
Definition
To produce many sets of teeth
Term
Succedaneous
Definition
To succed or take the place of the five primary teeth. (incisors, canine, and premolars).
Term
Non-Succedaneous
Definition

The teeth that do not succeed primary teeth in each quadrant. (molars)
