IDEIA

(Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act)

IDEIA first came into being on October 30, 1990 when the "Education of All Handicapped Children Act" was renamed "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act."

Definition
We are to allow the students with diabilities every opportunity to participate in the classroom.
Term

Giftedness

students abilities are significantly higher than average

it could be in intelligence, athleticism, etc.

Definition
The students with giftedness are those that tend to get ahead of their peers and get bored really easy.  As an educator, we need to make sure that the task is challenging enough that all students remain on task at all times.
Term

Intellectual disability is a broad concept encompassing various intellectual deficits, including mental retardation, deficits too mild to properly qualify as MR, various specific condition, and problems acquired later in life through acquired brain injuries or neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. Intellectual disabilities may appear at any age.

Intellectual disability is also increasingly being used as a synonym for the term mental retardation as used in standard medical references.

Definition

Speak directly to the student with an impairment as you would any other student.

Involvement with other children: The teacher should, where possible, get to know the non-impaired students, engaging them and providing them a connecting link between these students and the students with impairments.

Modeling for others: The teacher should be aware that his or her interactions with the impaired student will serve as a model for interactions with students who are impaired.

Backing off: Often, interactions occur without the involvement of a teacher. At times, in fact, the presence of an adult may inhibit interactions, and it may be necessary to "Back off" and let things happen on their own.

Interactions in the context of school activities: It is important to observe the interactions of the student with others in the learning environment.

Term
Learning disability is a classification including several disorders in which a person has difficulty learning in a typical manner, usually caused by an unknown factor or factors. The unknown factor is the disorder that affects the brain's ability to receive and process information. This disorder can make it problematic for a person to learn as quickly or in the same way as someone who isn't affected by a learning disability. People with a learning disability have trouble performing specific types of skills or completing tasks if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways.
Definition
Give the students easier test questions.  Don't grade them on the same grading scale as the rest of the class.  Give them a quiet place to do it.  No time limit on assignments.  Put their assignments on colored paper.
Term
Dyslexia is a broad term defining a learning disability that impairs a person's fluency or accuracy in being able to read, speak, and spell.
Definition
Being a PE teacher, dyslexia shouldn't be to hard of an obstacle because a lot of the talking going on in class is body language.  I won't have my dyslexia students answer any questions they aren't comfortable with and I'm not going to pressure them into doing anything they don't feel comfortable doing.
Term
Dyscalculia or math disability is a specific learning disability or difficulty involving innate difficulty in learning or comprehending mathematics.
Definition
As a PE teacher, I won't be doing a lot of math in my classroom, I'm going to try and get their minds away from normal subjects.  I won't have the class number themselves off to for a team so that way the dyscalculia students won't feel obligated to know their numbers.
Term
Dysgraphia is a deficiency in the ability to write, regardless of the ability to read. People with dysgraphia usually can write on some level, and often lack other fine motor skills and may be cross dominant, finding tasks such as tying shoes difficult
Definition
I will allow my students enough time at the beginning and end of class to tie their shoes an do any other tasks that are to difficult to do.  I will not deduct points for that.
Term
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), is an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that affect the way the brain processes auditory information, they cannot process the information they hear in the same way as others do, which leads to difficulties in recognizing and interpreting sounds, especially the sounds composing speech.
Definition
When I am presenting a task to the class, I will use posterboards and visual cues to help the students get a better understanding of the task.  They will be able to see and hear how to perform the task.
Term
Visual processing disorder is when an individual sees the same as everyone else but their brain has a hard time interpreting what it is they are looking at.
Definition
When it comes to explaining a task. I will first show them how to do it and then allow them the opportunity to perform the same task.  I will pay special attention to those students with visual processing disorder to make sure that they understand the task and aren't having to much difficulty with it.  It will allow them to feel the process and not necessarily see it.
Term
Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a condition characterized by a significant discrepancy between high verbal and lower performance scores on an IQ test, with deficits in motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.  Some proponents of the category believe that this discrepancy is attributable to dysfunction in the right cerebral hemisphere. NVLD involves deficits in perception, coordination, socialisation, non-verbal problem-solving and understanding of humour, along with well-developed rote memory.
Definition
Nonverbal learning disability students can become a distraction to the class especially if they are always talking out loud to process the information.  As an educator I can have all my students read the cues out loud so that way everyone is talking out loud and not just one student.  It will allow the students to understand the skill better by saying it out loud.
Term
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or AD/HD or ADD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder.  It is primarily characterized by "the co-existence of attentional problems and hyperactivity, with each behavior occurring infrequently alone" and symptoms starting before seven years of age
Definition
ADHD students have to always be moving.  As a PE teacher, you love this.  While I am giving instructions, I could my ADHD students a handful of putty to play with so they are staying active and quiet at the same time.  They will be my helpers.  They can be the ones to get the equpment out and put it away.
Term
Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before a child is three years old.  Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize
Definition
Get familiar with your students routines and expect them to do them.  Don't force the students to work away from their comfort zone.  They may want to have all their equipment in a certain order and that's ok, let them.
Term
Asperger syndrome or Asperger's syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported
Definition
For Asberger student that I have, I need to find the one thing that interests them the most and try to interpret that into my teaching.  I want my lesson to have some sort of interest towards them.  If they are interested in what they are learning, then they will be able to finish and learn the skill/task.
Term
The term anxiety covers four aspects of experiences an individual may have: mental apprehension, physical tension, physical symptoms and dissociative anxiety (symptoms associated with hyperventillation).  Anxiety disorder is divided into generalized anxiety, phobic, and panic disorders
Definition
Anxiety disorder should not be taken lightly.  A student with anxiety will have a hard time getting comfortable in your classroom.  Try your best to get to know your students so that they feel comfortable around you.  If your students are comfortable around you, then hopefully they will become with your classroom and their classmates.  Don't call them out in front of everyone else and allow them to answer questions that they are comfortable answering.
Term
Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and physical well-being.  It may include feelings of sadness, anxiety, emptiness, hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, irritability, or restlessness. Depressed people may lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable, experience difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions, and may contemplate or attempt suicide.
Definition
Try and find out what they are depressed about.  If it is personal than just let the student know that you're there for them and will do anything for them.  Talk to the student individually and keep it between the two of you.  If you as a teacher feel that it is threating to yourself or the students, then notify the principal and guidance counselor.
Term

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures which goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior. People who have it may appear very stubborn.

Common features of Oppositional Defiant Disorder include excessive, often persistent anger, frequent temper tantrums or angry outbursts, and disregard for authority. Children and adolescents with this disorder often annoy others on purpose, blame others for their mistakes, and are easily annoyed.

Definition
Students with ODD will have to be handled with at the beginning at the school year.  The principal and guidance counselor will already have prior knowledge of the students misbehavior.  When the student gets out of hand, I can call the office and they will take care of it.  To protect my students, I will make sure that the student doesn't hurt or disturb the others by nipping it in the budd right away.
Term
Visual impairment (or vision impairment) is vision loss to such a degree as to qualify as an additional support need through a significant limitation of visual capability resulting from either disease, trauma, or congenital or degenerative conditions that cannot be corrected by conventional means, such as refractive correction, medication, or surgery.
Definition
As a PE teacher, I am able to get my hands on some pretty awesome equipment.  They have balls that have a beeper in it so students with visual impairments can hear the ball.  The texture of the ball makes a huge deal to students with visual impairments.  They also have goals that have beepers on them so the students can shoot towards their goal and still know where their shooting.
Term
Physical impairment is when an individual has a physical disability such as missing a limb, dwarfism, etc.
Definition
If there is a student that lost their dominate hand, then have all the students use their non-dominant hand while playing the game to see how to adjust and modify their play.  It helps the physically impaired students feel more comfortable that their peers know exactly what they are going through.
Term
Deafness is a condition wherein the sufferer's ability to detect certain frequencies of sound is completely or partially impaired.
Definition
Using visuals are very important when you have hearing impaired students.  If you can, having an interpreter in the classroom is always helpful.  Let the student write out their answers.  In PE, when the whistle is blow, then you'll have to do your best to make sure that the student is paying attention and that the other classmates are listening for the whistle so that the deaf students will stop when their peers do.
Term
A communication disorder is a speech and language disorder which refers to problems in communication and in related areas such as oral motor function. The delays and disorders can range from simple sound substitution to the inability to understand or use language.
Definition
An interpreter would be very nice to have in all of these situations but since those aren't always available, you need to modify your lesson as a teacher.  Allow the students to write their answers down if they have a hard time communicating orally.  Do not rush the students for an answer because you're only going to make it worse for them.
