Term

True or False:

In the capsular pattern on the hip there is no limitation in external rotation or adduction?

Definition
TRUE
Term

Does this patient's measurements of Hip ROM (in degrees) follow a capsular pattern?

20-EXT, 95-FLX, 18-INT Rot,

43-EXT Rot, 26-ABD, 30-ADD

Definition

YES

Normals are as follows (in degrees):

30-EXT, 120-FLX, 45-INT Rot,

45-EXT Rot, 45-ABD, 30-ADD

Term
What is the end feel for KNEE EXTENSION?  KNE FLEXION?
Definition

EXTENSION: Firm End Feel

FLEXION: Soft End Feel

Term

If a patient comes to you with knee pain and you assess their ROM to be (in degrees):

5-EXT, 115 FLX

Do these values follow a capsular pattern?  If not what may the limitations be due to?

Definition

Does NOT follow capsular pattern, normal values for knee are (in degrees) Flexion: 120-150, Extension: 0-10.

Limitations may be due to:

Ligamentous adhesions, Internal derangement, Extra-articular limitations

Term
What is the end feel of hip ABD?  Hip ADD?
Definition
Both firm
Term
If a patient has 125 degrees of hip flexion with the knee flexed and 45 degrees of hip flexion with the knee extended, where might the issue lie?
Definition

Hamstring muscles.

If the hip has full ROM with the knee flexed, the hamstrings are the added factor once the knee is in extension.  They are probably tight and are limiting hip flexion through passive insufficiency.

Term
What are the bony anatomical landmarks for measuring knee ROM?
Definition
Lateral Melleoli, Lateral Femoral Epicondyles and Lateral Pelvic Axis
Term
Where do you place the axis of the goniometer when measuring Hip ABD/ADD?
Definition
Ipsilateral ASIS
Term

True or False:

Always measure passive ROM first so the patient gets a small stretch before voluntarily using their muscles of the active ROM measurement

Definition

Totally FALSE!!

Always measure ACTIVE ROM first!
