Term

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

(If sufficient runway remains)

Definition

1. Throttle: closed

2. Brake: as required

Term

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

(if insufficient runway remains)

Definition

1. Maintain safe airspeed: 70 KIAS

2. Mixure: idle cut-off

3. Fuel selector: off

4. ALT & BATT switch: off

5. Ignition: off

6. Seat belts and harness: tight

Term

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

(if sufficient altitude has been gained to attempt a restart)

Definition

1. Maintain safe airspeed: 70 KIAS

2. Primer: IN/LOCKED

3. Mixture: Rich

4. Fuel Selector: switch to tank containing fuel

5. Carb Heat: on

6. Fuel Pump: on

7. Mags: on

8. Master: on

If power is not reagain, proceed with power off landing.

9. If power has not been restored: ignition switch left, right, then both

10. Throttle and mixture: try different settings

When power is restored: carb heat: off , fuel pump: off

Term

Power Off Landing

Definition

1. Emergency Frequency: 121.5

2. Trim for best glide angle: 70 KIAS

3. Locate most suitable landing area.

When committed to landing:

    * Mixture: off        * Fuel selector: off       * ALT/BATT: off

    * Ignition: off       * Seat belt and harness: tight

Term

Fire on Ground

Engine Fire During Start

Definition

1. Starter: Crank

2. Mixture: off

3. Throttle: open

4. Fuel pump: off

5. Fuel selector: off

Abandon airplane if fire continues

Term

Engine Fire:

During Flight

Definition

1. Source of fire: check

2. Fuel selector: off

3. Throttle: closed

4. Mixture: closed

5. fuel pump: off

6. Cabin heat: off

7. Defroster: off

Proceed with power off landing proceedure

Term

Electrical Fire During Flight

(Smoke in Cabin)

Definition

1. BATT/ALT switch: off

2. Vents: open

3. Cabin Heat/Defroster: off

LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

Term

Loss of Oil Pressure

Definition

Land as soon as possible and invesigate cause

Prepare for power off landing

Term
Loss of Fuel Pressure
Definition

1. Fuel pump: on

2. Fuel Selector: check on tank containing fuel

Term
High Oil Temperature
Definition

Land at nearest airport and investigate the problem

Prepare for power off landing

Term

Electrical Failure

Alt Annunciator light Illuminated

Definition

1. Ammeter: check to verify inoperative ALT

If ammeter shows zero:

2. ALT switch: off

3. ALT field circuit breakers: check and reset as required

4. ALT switch: on

If power is not restored:

5. ALT switch: off

If alternator output can not be restored, reduce electrical loads and land as soon as practical.

The battery is the only remaining source of electrical power.

Term

Electrical Failures

Alternator over 20 Amps above known electrical load

Definition

1. ALT  switch: off

2. BATT switch: as required

Land as soon as possible Anticipate complete electrical failure

Term

Spin Recovery

(unintentional spin)

Definition

1. Throttle: idle

2. Aileron: neutral

3. Rudder: full opposite in the directionof the rotation

4. Control wheel: full forward

5. Rudder: neutral (when rotation stops)

6. Control wheel: as required to smoothly regain level flight attitude

Term
Open Door
Definition

If both upper and lower latches are open, the door will trail slightly open and airspeeds will be reduced slightly

To close the door in flight:

1. Slow airplane to: 90 KIAS

2. Cabin vents: closed

3. Storm window: open

4. If upper latch is open: latch

If side latch is open: pull on arm rest while moving latch handle to latch position

If both latches are open: latch side latch and then top latch

Term

Engine Roughness

Definition

1. Carburetor heat: on

If roughness continues after one minute:

2. Carburetor heat: off

3. Mixture: adjust for max smoothness

4. Fuel selector: switch tanks

5. Engine gauges: check

6. Magnetos switch: L then R, then BOTH

If operation is satisfactory on either magneto, continue on that magneto at reduced power and full "RICH" mixture to first airport prepare for power off landing

Term
Carburetor Icing
Definition

1. Carburetor heat: on

2. Mixture: adjust for max smoothness

Partial carburetor heat may be worse than no heat at all, since it may melt part of the ice which will re-feeze in the intake system. Therefore when using carburetor heat always use full and when ice is removed, return the control to the full cold position.
