Allegory
Definition
Say you were reading a story about a husband and wife and the wife's name happens to be Faith. Now if in the story the husband is questioning his religion and his relationship with his wife is faltering, it is allegorical because his wife's name is symbolic of both his loss in religious belief and loss in "Faith" aka his wife.

Foreshadowing
Definition
Foreshadowing is like, in a book or movie, when they tell you something that will happen later. Such as, in Star Wars, Episode 2 Obi Wan is quoted, " Why do I get the feeling you will be the death of me?" He is later killed by Anakin, whom he is speaking to in the quote. Or in Where the Red Fern Growns there is a dog fight in the beginning and a dog is wounded exactly like in later in the book, a different dog of course.

Paradox
Definition
Paradox can prove to be very revealing about human nature and the way that we speak. If someone says to you "I'm a compulsive liar," do you believe them or not? That statement in itself is a paradox, because it is self contradictory, which is precisely what a paradox is.

At the most basic level, a paradox is a statement that is self contradictory because it often contains two statements that are both true, but in general, cannot both be true at the same time. In the aforementioned example, can someone be both a compulsive liar yet telling the truth at the same time?

Simile
Definition
Similes can be found just about anywhere; from the printed word to oral conversation; in language, literature, and music. A simile is an analogy that compares two things that are alike in one way. To help you identify a simile, know that the words “like” or “as” are always used.

Well-known similes are:

•“cute as a kitten,” comparing the way someone looks to the way a kitten looks
•“as busy as a bee” comparing someone’s level of energy to a fast-flying bee
•"as snug as a bug in a rug" comparing someone who is very cozy to how comfortable a bug can be in a rug
