Artist: Watteau Title: Return from Cythera Date: 1717 Location: France
Notes: His most famous painting. Cythera is an Island of love. Away from urbanization and into nature for a different encounter with love. Lower class and high class mingling. He turned this in to the academy of painting, they accepted and was invited into the academy but they changed the title to "The Elegant Feast" -Why? They thought that the idea of class mingling was too extreme and "in your face". Environment plays a big role in these paintings. |
