Term

Define Hazard Class 1

Definition

Explosives

Has 6 divisions (1.1 - 1.6)

Explosive risk decreases as # increases

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.1
Definition

Explosives that have a mass explosive hazard (Affecting almost the whole load instantaneously)

Ex. Dynamite, mines, watted mecury fulminate etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.2
Definition

Explosives that have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard

Ex. Detonation cord, flares, some fireworks etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.3
Definition

Explosives that have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or both but not a mass explosion hazard.

Ex. Practice grenades, smokeless powder, Liquid-fueled rocket motors, aerial flares

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.4
Definition

Explosives that present a minor explosion hazard. The explosive effects are largely confined to the package and no projection of fragments of appreciable size or range is expected.

An external fire must not cause a virtually instantaneous explosion of almost the entire contents of the package.

Ex. Signal cartridges, cap type primers, igniter fuses, fireworks etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.5
Definition

Substances that have a mass explosion hazard but are so insensitive that there is very little probability of initiation or of transition from burning to detonation under normal conditions of transport.

Ex. Prilled ammonium nitrate fertilizer/ fuel oil (ANFO) Mixtures and blasting agents

Term
Define Hazard Class 1.6
Definition

Extremely insensitive articles that do not have a mass explosion hazard.

This divition is comprised of articles that contain only extremely insensitive detonating substances and that demonstrate a negligible probability of initiation or propagation.

Ex. Watted cellulopse nitrate

Term
Define Hazard Class 2
Definition

Gasses

DOT defines a gas as a meterial that have a vapor pressure greater than 43.5 psi at 122 degrees F or is completly gaseous at 68 degrees Fat a standard pressure of 14.7 psi

Term
Define Hazard Class division 2.1
Definition

Flammable gas

Consists of any material that is a gas at 68 degrees F or less at normal atmospheric pressure and has a boiling point of 68 degrees or less.

Ex. Compressed hydrogen, isobutane, methane and propane etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class division 2.2
Definition

Nonflammable, Nonpoisonous Gas

Ex. Carbon dioxide, helium, refrigerated liquid nitrogen etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class Division 2.3
Definition

Gas Poisonous by inhalation

Ex. Cyanide, Hydrocyanic acid etc.

Term
Define Hazard Class 3
Definition

Flammable and Combustible Liquids

Flammable Liquids

A flammable liquid generally a liquid having a flash point of no more than 141 degrees F, or any material in a liquid state with a flash point at or above 100 degrees F that is intentionally heated and offered for transportation or transported at or above its flash point in a bulk packaging.

Combustible Liquids

Does not fall into any other hazard class

Flash Point above 141 degrees F & below 200 degrees F

Term
Define Hazard Class 4
Definition

Flammable Solids, Spontaneously Combustible Materials, and Dangerous-when-wet Materials

Has 3 divisions

Term
Define Hazard Class Division 4.1
Definition

Flammable Solid Material

Term
Define Hazard Class Devision 4.2
Definition
Spontaneously Combustible Material
Term
Define Hazard Class Division 4.3
Definition
Dangerous When-Wet Material
Term
Define Hazard Class 5
Definition

Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides

Has 2 divisons

Term
Define Hazard Class Division 5.1
Definition

Poisonous Material

Material, other than a gas that is known to be so toxic to humans as to afford a hazard to health during transportation or that is presumed to be toxic to humans based toxicity tests on laboratory animals.

Ex. Aninile, arsenic, liquid tetraethyl lead

Term
Define Hazard Class Division 5.2
Definition

Material known to contain or suspected of containing a pathogen.

Pathogen- A virus or microorganism or a protenaceous infectious particle that has the potential to cause disease in humans or animals.

Term
PG III
Definition

For Division 6.1, Packing group III (PG III) materials.

May have a modified POISON placard that reads PG III below the mid-line of the placard rather than the word poison.

*A packing group is a DOT packing category bases on the degree of danger presented by the hazardous material.

PG I=Great Danger PG II=Medium Danger PG III= Minor Danger

Term
Definition

Inhalation Hazard Placard

Used for any amount of D 6.1

A or B inhalation hazard only (See D 2.3 for hazard zones)

Term

Harmful Placard

Used to indicate materials that should be kept away from food.

Definition
Term
Define Hazard Class 7
Definition
Radioactive Materials
Term
Define Hazard Class 8
Definition

Corrosive Materials

Ex. Battery acid, soda lime etc.

Term
Definition

Miscellaneous Placard

Class 9

Ex. Blue asbestos, solid carbon dioxide (dry ice)

Term
Definition
