-The problem before the transportation revolution was un-navigable rivers. It was costly and slow to ship goods to other areas of the county. There were several innovations that fixed these problems:
1. Toll Roads and Turnpikes: improved roads for easier travel.

-Completed in 1825 and funded by the state of NY, it was a canal that ran from Albany, New York to Buffalo, New York, linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes
-Enabled trade from the ocean to the inner region of the US, made New York a pivotal region for trade (even more so than before)
-Fluhman called it the crown jewel of American cities.
-Made it quick and easy to transport goods to main shipping partners in Europe. Dramatically changes the economy of the North.
-Prices of goods drop, people out West have to be less self-sustainable. |

-Work on 1st railroad (Baltimore and Ohio)-B&O Monopoly began in 1828, by 1860-30,000 miles of rail more than the rest of the world combined.
-During the early 19th Century, Railroads became the newest, fastest, and most powerful transportation technology in the US, especially because they could be built anywhere, unlike canals.
-Railroads began as private endeavors, utilizing different gauges and sizes of tracks,etc. from railway to railway
-Ultimately, railroads became more uniform and government-funded, with the goal of connecting all areas of the country
-Railroads increased speed and capacity of trade, and enabled for mass mobilization of troops
-Railroad junctions became very important in war because of the above statement.
-The expansion of the railroad allowed the NW to ship goods East rather than South on the Mississippi and vice versa, so they became one politically starting in the late 40’s instead of being an ally more with the South. |
