Artist --- Maxime du Camp
Title – Abu Simbel
Date – mid 19th century
Country – France
Medium – Salted paper print from paper negative (not Calotype)
Born in Paris, Du Camp was the son of a successful surgeon.
After finishing college, he indulged in his strong desire for travel, thanks to his father's assets.
Du Camp traveled in Europe and the East between 1844 and 1845, and again between 1849 and 1851 in company with Gustave Flaubert.
After his return, Du Camp wrote about his traveling experiences. Flaubert also wrote about his experiences with Maxime.[1][2][3]In 1851,
Du Camp became a founder of the Revue de Paris (suppressed in 1858), and a frequent contributor to the Revue des deux mondes. In 1853, he became an officer of the Legion of Honour. Serving as a volunteer with Garibaldi in his 1860 conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Du Camp recounted his experiences in Expédition des deux Siciles (1861). In 1870 he was nominated for the senate, but his election was frustrated by the downfall of the Empire. He was elected a member of the Académie française in 1880, mainly, it is said, on account of his history of the Commune, published under the title of Les Convulsions de Paris (1878–1880).Du Camp was an early amateur photographer who learned the craft from Gustave Le Gray shortly prior to departing on his 1849-1859 trip to Egypt.[4] His travel books were among the first to be illustrated with photographs.Maxime Du Camp died in 1894 and was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. |

TITLE - Meeting of the Rails AT Promontory Point, Utah

COUNTRY – USA
MEDIUM – ALBUMEN PRINT / COLLODION WET PLATE NEGATIVE
Union Pacific Historical Museum, Omaha, Neb.
Promontory Summit where the First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was officially completed on May 10, 1869.
By the summer of 1868, Central Pacific had completed the first rail route through the Sierra Nevada and was now moving down towards the Interior Plains and the line of the Union Pacific. More than 4,000 workers, of whom two thirds were Chinese, had laid more than 100 mi (160 km) of track at altitudes above 7,000 ft (2,100 m). In May 1869, the railheads of the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railroads finally met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory.[2] A specially-chosen Chinese [and Irish] crew had taken only 12 hours to lay the final 10 miles (16 km) of track in time for the ceremony.[3]

ARTIST - ALBERT SOUTHWORTH and JOSIAH HAWES.
TITLE - Operating Room, Woman Patient, OR “THE FIRST USE OF ETHER”
DATE - 1840S
COUNTRY USA….BOSTON
MEDIUM - DAGUERREOTYPE
Daguerreotype. Massachusetts General Hospital News Office, Boston.
The setting for this daguerreotype is the teaching amphitheater of Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. John Collins Warren, cofounder of the hospital and professor of anatomy, stands with his hands upon the patient's thigh, explaining the proceedings to a student audience seated out of camera range. Dr. Solomon Davis Townsend, who performed the operation, stands behind Warren with his left arm akimbo. An unidentified anesthetist holds a sponge soaked in ether near the head of the patient who, curiously enough, still wears his socks.
Warren had commissioned Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes to make the first photographic record of an actual live medical operation, which was also the retiring Dr. Warren's last lecture. The doctors' heads all moved during the long exposure, causing blurring and confirming the photograph's candid circumstances. |

TITLE ---Geronimo – Apache
DATE - 1905
COUNTRY – USA
MEDIUM – ALBUMEN AND PHOTOGRAVURE
Description by Edward S. Curtis: This portrait of the historical old Apache was made in March, 1905. According to Geronimo's calculation he was at the time seventy-six years of age, thus making the year of his birth 1829. The picture was taken at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the day before the inauguration of President Roosevelt, Geronimo being one of the warriors who took part in the inaugural parade at Washington. He appreciated the honor of being one of those chosen for this occasion, and the catching of his features while the old warrior was in a retrospective mood was most fortunate.

ARTIST – JOHANNES VERMEER
TITLE - Girl with a Red Hat
DATE – 17TH CENTURY
COUNTRY – HOLLAND
MEDIUM – OIL PAINTING
is a small painting by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, executed 1665-1666, in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.. It is one of a number of Vermeer's tronies -- depictions of models fancifully dressed that were not (as far as is known) intended to be portraits of specific, identifiable subjects.
It should be acknowledged that Vermeer could have obtained his 'photographic perspective', and exact reproductions of the maps, by a number of methods other than tracing camera images. Scholars have however pointed to effects in Vermeer's canvases that seem to carry more distinctive marks of an optical way of working. For example, it is significant that there are several passages where Vermeer seems to paint in very soft focus, as in his little portrait of the Girl with a Red Hat.
Notice the sculpted lions' heads, which we know from other paintings are decorations on the backs of chairs. Vermeer has a very characteristic way of showing highlights on reflective surfaces like pottery, polished wood or - in this case - polished brass. In reality a highlight takes the shape of the light source that it reflects. Since Vermeer is painting indoors, the sources of light would be the windows; and so the resulting highlights would in reality be rectangular in shape, perhaps distorted into four-sided shapes with curved edges where they are formed on curved surfaces. Here, however, Vermeer has tended to paint the highlights on the lions' heads as true circles. It has been suggested that what he is doing is imitating accidental effects of slightly unfocussed optical images. |

ARTIST - - HENRY PEACH ROBINSON.
TITLE - - “Fading Away”
DATE – MID 19TH CENTURY OR 1858.
MEDIUM --- Albumen composite print.
COUNTRY - ENGLAND
Royal Photographic Society, Bath, England. After seeing Rejlander's work, Robinson, a fellow painter-turned-photographer who had started as a portraitist but had set his sights on a higher purpose, adopted combination printing. Claiming that "a method that will not admit of modifications of the artist cannot be art," he first worked out preliminary sketches (pi. no. 267) into which the photographic parts were fitted in the manner of a puzzle or patchwork quilt. Fading Away (pi. no. 268), his inaugural effort created from five different negatives—also acquired by the royal couple—was praised for "exquisite sentiment" by some and criticized as morbid by others. Though Robinson avoided such emotion-laden subjects again, for 30 or so years he continued to mix the "real with the artificial," as he described it, using models "trained to strict obedience" in order to produce scenes agreeable to a public that esteemed engravings after the genre paintings of Sir David Wilkie and Thomas Faed. |
