What Are Semantic and Episodic Memories
Definition
Semantic – meaning (codes / symbols etc)
Episodic – information about specific episodes or events
Term
Automatic actions / motor skills
Definition
Once learnt, some skills become automatic, however complex tasks require continual
monitoring and attention.
Term
Sequential Task Handling
Definition
The brain can usually deal with one specific thing at a time. It can however, deal with multiple
tasks by rapidly switching from one to the other. It can also carry out several automatic
actions at once.
Term
Mental Capacity
Definition
When a pilot is learning to fly the mental overload is high due to the influx of new information
– the brain is working to full capacity. This means that the amount of residual capacity for
decision making is small as you become more experienced i.e. motor skills are more
automatic – the capacity is much greater.
Term
Factors affecting information processing
Definition
o How accurately and completely the information in the memory was learned
o How long ago it was learned and reinforced
o Negative personality problems or stresses at time of learning
o Illness
o Hypoxia
o Mind set (what they expected to experience, not was actually there)
Term
Adverse Personality Traits will introduce hazardous thoughts
Definition
o Avoiding responsibility – that’s the other aircrafts worry not mine

pressure
o In the middle ear the gas expands and escapes through the Eustachian tube.
o In the sinuses there is little room to expand and escape so pain can arise
Term
Trapped Gases In the descent
Definition
o The reverse occurs
o A vacuum (partial vacuum) occurs
o Intestines – no problem
o Ears – problem if the Eustachian tube is blocked.
o Swallowing, moving jaw to clear
o Sinuses – pain if blocked.
Term
