June 25 and 26 over 2,000 Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians defeated and killed 250+ US soldiers including Colonel George Custer (Custer's Last Stand)

Ordered the removal of Indian Tribes still residing east of the Mississippi to newly established Indian Territory west of Arkansas and Missouri. Tribes resisting eviction were forcibly removed by American forces, often after prolonged legal or military battles.

Created to aid newly emancipated slaves by providing food, clothing, medical care, education, and legal support

Achievements were uneven and depended largely on the quality of local administrators

This was made because they didnt know what the country would be like in the future and they needed to be able to make changes based off of the economy and such

Laws passed throughout the South to restrict the rights of emancipated blacks, particularly, with respect to negotiating labor contracts. Increased Northerners' criticisms of President Andrew Johnson's lenient Reconstruction policies.

1863

Declared all slaves in rebelling states to be free but did not affect slavery in non-rebelling Border States. The Proclamation closed the door on possible compromise with the South and encouraged thousands of Southern slaves to flee the Union lines.
