Term
Define improvised explosive device
Definition
device placed or fabricated in an improvised manner incorporating destructive, lethal; noxious, pyrotechnic, or incendiary chemicals and designed to destroy, incapacitate, harass, or distract
Term
Define booby trap
Definition
an explosive or non-explosive device or other material, deliberately placed to cause casualties when an apparently harmless object is disturbed or a normally safe act is performed
Term
Define mine
Definition
an explosive or material normally encased designed to destroy or damage ground vehicles, boats, or aircrafts, or designed to wound, kill or otherwise incapacitate personnel.  It may be detonated by the action of its victim, by the passage of time, or by controlled means
Term
What are the components of an IED
Definition

Main Charge

Initiating System

Casing

Term
Describe main charge
Definition
the most common explosives used are military munitions.  It is the easiest to use and provide a ready-made fragmentation effect and they allow for relatively easy daisy chaining which is linking mutliple main charges together over long or short distances for simultaneous detonation.  common hardware such as ball bearings, bolts, nuts, or nails, can be used to enhance the fragmentation.  propane tanks, fuel cans, and battery acid can and have been added to IEDs to propagate the blast and thermal effects of the IED
Term
Describe initiation system
Definition
system or fuse functions the device.  It could be a simple hard wire for command detonation to a cellular phone or remote controls to toy card and airplanes for radio controlled IEDs. Almost always consist of a blasting cap. Battery used as a power source
Term
Describe casing
Definition
  • range in size from cig pack to a large truck or airplane
  • the container is used to help hide the IED and to possibly prov fragmentation
  • incl soda cans, animal carcasses, plastic bags, vests or satchels for suicide bombers
Term
What is the most commonly used initiation method
Definition
command detonated and it uses electric firing circuit systems.  Electric firing circuit systems are wither hard-wired with a firing wire (speaker wire) or a wireless system
Term
Wireless firing systems use radio transmission from what types of wireless items
Definition

radios, pagers, doorbell systems, light switch devices, garage door openers, car alarm receivers/unlocking devices, toy car remote controllers

cell phone transmission

Term
Describe time IEDs
Definition
designed to function after a preset delay, allowing the enemy to make his escape or to target military forces which have created a pattern.  include igniferous (fire producing), chemical, mechanical, and electronic devices
Term
Describe command initiated IEDs
Definition
  • common method of employment and allow the en to choose the optimum moment of initiation
  • normally used against targetsthat are in transit or where a routine pattern has been established
  • most common are w/ command wires or radio controlled devices, cordless telephone, remote car openers and alarms
Term
Describe victim-actuated IED
Definition
  • means of attacking an individual or group of individuals
  • various types of initiation devices which incl pull or trup, pressure, pressure release, movement sensitive, light sensitive, proximity, and electronic switches
  • trip wires have been used for foot mobile patrols or for turret gunners in convoys
Term
Where are the common areas of IED emplacement?
Definition
  • previous IED sites; frequently traveled, predictable routes, roads leading to FOBs, common patrol routes
  • boundary turnaround points; roadway shoulders (usually 10 ft)
  • medians, by roadside, or buried under the surface of any type of road, often in potholes and covered w/ dirt or reheated asphalt
  • trees, light posts, signs, overpasses, and bridge spans that are elevated
  • unattended vehicles, trucks, cars, carts, or motorcycles
  • guardrails, abandoned structures, buildings
  • potential incident control point
  • animal carcasses, deceased human bodies, fake bodies, scarecrows
  • employed at edge of town
Term
The en will lure friendly forces into an IED kill zone using what types of method
Definition
  • broken down motorist
  • person in need of medical attention
  • unaccompanied young child/children

beware booby trapped IEDs are common, especially in weapons and munition caches

Term
what are some examples of how the en mark the IED
Definition

piles of rock

arranged sticks

paint markings

cloth or plastic strip tied to branches

Term
What is a primary indicator
Definition
will be change in environment i.e. something new on the route that was not there yesterday.  The en will leave a visual indicator to inform the local pop.
Term
what are some examples of indicators
Definition
  • unusual behavior patterns or changes in community pattern
  • vehicles following convoy for long distance and then pulling over
  • personnel on overpasses, signals from vehicles or bystanders
  • ppl videotaping ordinary activities or military actions
  • suspicious objects, metallic objects (soda cans and cylinders)
  • colors that seem out of place (disturbed dirt, concrete that does not match the area, colored detonating cord or other exposed parts)
  • markers by the side of the road, graffiti symbols or writing on buildings
  • signs that are newly erected or seem out of place
Term
List the tenets of IED defeat framework
Definition
  • Predict-activities used to ID and understand en personnel equip or other actions to forecast specific en IED
  • detect-activities contribute to the ID and loc of en personnel, explosive devices, & their component parts, equip, & infrastr IOT prov accurate and timely info
  • prevent-disrupt and defeat the IED op chain of event.  Actions focus on the target to interdict or destr key en personnel b4 emplacement
  • Avoid-keep friendly forces fr IEDs, prevention not possible/have failed
  • Neutralize - contri to destruction/reduction of en pers/explosive devices/ supp
  • Protect-activities to improve survivability of IED targets thru hardening awareness trng/other techniques

Term
IED defeat framework can be broken down into what 2 major sub-elements?
Definition
  • proactive elements (pre-detection) are actions taken by friendly forces to predict, detect, prevent, avoid, neutralize, and protect against IED events.  focus on battle command and awareness training
  • reactive elements (post detection) are actions taken by friendly forces to detect, avoid, neutralize.  focus on TTPs, drills, SOPs, troop and system protection
Term
Small unit leaders has the capability of affecting which tenets of the IED-D framework
Definition
predict, detect, avoid, protect
Term
What are the actions taken upon contact of an IED?
Definition
The five C's (confirm, clear, cordon, check, control)
Term
How do you report an IED to higher?
Definition
9 line report
Term
What does the 9 line report consist of
Definition

line 1-date time group, when the item was discovered

line 2-report activity n loc: unit and grid loc of the IED

line 3-contact method: radio freq, call sign, POC and tele #

line 4-type of ordnance; dropped, projected, placed or thrown; # of itmes

line 5- NBC contaminations, be as specific as poss

line 6-resources threatened: equip, facilities, or other assets

line 7-impact on mission, short desc of curr tact situation & how device affects the stat of mission

line 8-protective measures to pers and equip

line 9-rec priority:immediate, indirect, minor, no threat

Term
What is the process of clear?
Definition
evacuate the area of at least 300 m.  Do not allow anyone to enter the area other then EOD.
Term
What is the process in cordon?
Definition
establish blocking pos to prev vehicle and foot traffic fr approaching the IED.  Immediately search the area of secondary IED before occupying it.  Make max use of available cover.  Establish a 360 security and dominate the area.  Scan close in and away fr your pos.  Randomly check ppl leaving the area to deter attacks.  Est obstacles to control approaches to security pos.
Term
How do you "check" the area?
Definition
Use the 5 to 25 m method checking the immediate area around the IED and cordoned positions for secondary devices.  Expand the seach area as time/threat permit
Term
What do you do in "control" of the 5 C's?
Definition
Clear and set up an entry control point for first responders.  do not let others go fwd to "inspect" the IED.  Make contingency plans in case you are attk by  small arms or rocket propelled grenandes.
Term

After the 5 C's, what are the following steps?

Definition

attempt to locate insurgents in the area, if poss, attempted to kill or capture

mark the IED using ref point

contact higher hq to report any IEDs using 9 line rpt

do not use radios, cell phones, radars, or other electronic devices w/i 100m

gather info about IED area/threat environment and interview witnesses

leave area when the IED is secured or conduct a battle hand over w/ EOD/other follow on units, restore area to normalcy

Term
What do you not do when you suspect an IED?
Definition
  • never approach the susp IED - use binos
  • do not pick up det cord - is explosive, do not trace or pull
  • tracing command wire - trip wires, do not walk parallel but work in an "S" pattern , crossing command wire until initiation pt is loc
Term
An example of a driven immediate action drill uses the acronym REACTER, what does it mean?
Definition

Report to higher

Evacuate the area (300 m)

Area (secure the area)

Clear the zone

Treat casualties ( do not do it in kill zone)

Establish CCP and LZ away fr kill zone; min 300 m, conduct 5/25m checks

Report/recover (report to higher/recover damaged vehicle is required)

Term
How can we prevent emplacement
Definition
be collecting info abotu insurgent activities, deterring activities thru patrols and counter IED ambush teams, clearing the roadsides of debris, and reducing the availability of bomb making materials
Term
What are the keypoints to IED hunting?
Definition
in depth knowledge of area, concentrate efforts on high threat areas, clear the route often, use combination of mounted/dismounted teams, move slow enough to observe, observe from multiple angles, investigate every clue that tends topoint to an IED, take size of object into consideration, look for other IED indicators, use optics to maximize standoff, elicit info fr local citizens
Term
What are ways you can attempt to avoid attacks?
Definition
  • driving at 40 mph or more with a 50m interval b/w vehicles whenever poss
  • staying as far fr the shoulder of the road as poss
  • being observant about key en IED attk threat indicators like areas where traffic slows or the terrain could conceal an IED
  • common items used to camouflage IEDs
  • choose routes w/ as few visually obscuring or traffic slowing terrain features
Term
Define Vehicle Born IED indicators
Definition
Driver— Ignoring orders to stop, attempting to circumvent a security checkpoint, or attempting to maneuver close to coalition assets Unusual appearance. Uncharacteristically clean shaven and very short hair (cutting the hair is a part of the purifying ritual that many follow prior to an attack) Usually in mid twenties, but may vary from situation to situation Driving erratically; driving too fast or too slow Wearing inappropriate dress for the environment Presence of lone male driver. However, may be any number of people is an unsuspecting driver is driving VBIED. Females have been used as a distraction.
Term
Define Vehicle Born IED indicators (cont)
Definition
Vehicle— Noticeable sagging of the vehicle Additional antenna for radio controlled devices Darkened or covered windows to conceal vehicle contents or actions of the driver Recent painting of the vehicle to cover body alterations Crudely covered holes made in the vehicle to hide explosives New welding marks No license plates Escorted by unusual security detail for type vehicle New tires on an old vehicle Anything unusual in factory built compartments New or shiny bolts or screws Unusual scratches Signs of tampering, such as broken parts or bent sheet metal Areas and components cleaner or dirtier than surrounding areas Wire and tape stored in vehicle
