Term
What do current and voltage clamps measure? |
|
Definition
- Current clamp: intracellular, population, currents in the cell, the neurons themselves
- Voltage clamp: whole cell patch, all receptors of one cell |
|
|
Term
What is membrane potential? |
|
Definition
In living cells there is a potential difference between the inside and outside of the cell.
When a channel opens, this difference makes ions flow. This generates current, which we can record. |

- What kind of patch clamp recording is this?
- What does 0pA and 2pA refer to? |
|
Definition
- Singe channel recording / voltage clamp
- 0pA = channel is closed, 2pA = channel is open |

- What kind of patch recording is this?
- What are the spikes? |
|
Definition
- Whole-cell / current clamp
- We're clamping the current, which allows us to measure the voltage (the pressure that pushes the current) |
