KINESIOLOGY

The discipline or body of knowledge that sutdies the physical activity as embodied in the subdisciplines of kinesiology.

DISCIPLINE

An organized boy of knowledge considered worthy of study, usually studied an college or university curriculum.

TECHNICAL DEFINITIONS

Specialized meanings of terms used to convey information to others within a technical field.

MOVEMENT

Any change in the position of body parts relative to each other.

THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of concepts and principles and the research strategies used to discover them.  Theoretical knowledge in kinesiology is knowledge about physical activity, embedded in the sub-disciplines, acquired by formal studies of the sub-disciplines.

SUB-DISCIPLINES

A way of dividing the scholkarly study of physical activity to facilitate teaching and research.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge dervied from the integration of performance, scholarly study, and practical experience about appropriate ways to deliver professional service.

EXERCISE

Physical activity intended to improve one's health or alter the appearance of one's body.

TRAINING

Physical activity carried out for the express purpose of conditioning for performance in athletic or other types of events.

HEALTH-RELATED EXERCISE

Exercise undertaken to maintain or develop a sound working body.

THERAPEUTIC-EXERCISE

The systematic and scientific application of exercise and movement to develop or restore muscular strength, endurace and flexibility; neuromuscular condition; cardiovascular efficiency; and other performance factors.

SKILLED MOVEMENT

Performances that require accuracy of direction, force, and rhythem or timing to accomplish predetermined goals.

SPORT

Physical activity in which movement is performed to achieve a specific goal in a manner specified by established rules.

DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS

Skills performed in non-sport settings where rules and competition are irrelevant.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL

Professionals in-training whose orientation to undergraduate studies is to become highly competent practitioners.

HOLISM

When applied to the nature of persons, a position that underscores the interdependence and interrelatedness of thought and physicality.
