Term
Dorsiflexion
Definition
-Occurs with slight abduction/eversion
-Minimum of 10° necessary for function
-Normal range: 10-20°
-ankle is in closed pack position
-occurs around oblique axis
Term
Plantarflexion
Definition
-Occurs with slight adduction/inversion
-normal range: 20-50°
-ankle is in open packed postion
-occurs around oblique axis
Term

Arthrokinematics of

Dorsiflexion

(open chain)

Definition
-Posterior slide/glide of talus on talofibular joint and anterior roll
-opposite movements in closed chain
Term

Arthrokinematics of

Plantarflexion

(open chain)

Definition
-anterior slide of talus on talofibular joint and posterior roll
-opposite movements for closed chain
Term
Subtalar/Talocalcaneal Joint
Definition
-Formed by posterior, middle, and anterior facets of calcaneus and talus
-triplanar motion around a single oblique axis
-joint is in closed pack when foot is supinated
-1° of freedom: supination/pronation
Term

Pronation of Subtalar Joint

(Information Incorrect!!!!)

Definition
-Medial aspect of foot comes down to floor and lateral aspect raises.
-Joint is in open pack
-Combination of calcaneal eversion, Talar adduction and PF (non-weight bearing)
Term
Supination of Subtalar Joint
Definition
-Medial aspect of foot raises off the floor and the lateral aspect comes down on the floor
-Joint is in closed pack
-Combination of calcaneal inversion, abduction and DF of head of talus (Non-weight bearing)
Term
A pt comes in after rolling his ankle. He explained that the outside of his ankle hit the ground as he was running. You understand that he is talking about the lateral malleoli. What ligament did he most likely injure?
Definition
LCL, he was explaining that he ended up in an inverted position and excess inversion would cause extra tension on the LCL.
Term
An elderly pt comes in believing there is a problem with her ankles. She has no pain and can dorsiflex 10° with each foot. Upon hearing her measurements she is positive that if she can increase her range she will not have as many problems performing her ADL activities. Is this likely? Why or why not?
Definition
10°of dorsiflexion is in the normal range, so it is most likely not the cause of her issues. More information is needed to determine if it could possibly be a strength issue or balance problem.
Term
A pt comes in with bilateral foot pain. She explains that she is a businesswoman and she is on her feet all day long giving presentations. She makes a comment about high heels and you follow up on that. What do you think can be causing her foot pain?
Definition
Between the high heels most of her day and sleeping with her feet in a plantarflexed position her plantar aponeurosis becomes taut when in dorsiflexion causing her pain.
Term
Ankle and Foot
