What is a xerophyte? In what habitat are they found? What are some features of them? |
|
Definition
Xerophytes are plants found in arid (dry) climates. They are composed of succulent tissue, large photosynthetic stems and waxy cuticles. They also have hair and spines to prevent overheating and herbivores. Their roots can either be long to reach water far in the ground, contain water holding tubers or be shallow to absorb water from dew and light rainfalls. |

What is the difference between coevolution and convergent evolution? |
|

What are some unique properties of tropical plants? |
|
Definition

Term
What are aerenchyma and pneumatophores? Which types of plants have them? |
|
Definition
Aerenchyma is a type of tissue which holds air and helps gas exchange for plants subject to flood condtions. They can also aid floatation. Pneumatophores are roots that protrude from the ground to facilitate gas exchange. These are both properties of aquatic plants. |

What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors? |
|
Definition
Biotic means living, abiotic means not living |
|
|
Term
Define these three factors of diversity:
- Competition
- Predation
- Parasitism
- Mutualism
|
|
Definition
- Competition is when species compete for the same resource
- Predation is when one species benifits while the other is harmed
- Parasitism is where the parasite benifits
- Mutualism is when both species benefit

How can the height of a tree be estimated with a protractor and measuring tape? |
|
Definition
Use SOH-CAH-TOA
Tan(angle) = opposite*adjacent
Tan(angle) = tree height * distance to tree
Tree height = (tan(angle))/(distance to tree) |
