Submersible Pumps
Definition
  1. Used in most 4" Wells
  2. Pump is below the water level
  3. low flow and high pressure characteristics
  4. Don't need to be primed.
  5. Only push water, don't pull it.

Definition
2"meter= 120 GPM 3" meter= 280 GPM
Term
Maximum percent of flow capacity a meter should be expected to meet
Definition
80% Therefore if a meter is rated at 50GPM only zone for 37 GPM.

Term
Typical Rotor nozzle application rate for 20',25',35',50' radius...
Definition
.35" water/hour
Term
Friction loss
Definition
loss of pressure as water moves through a pipe.
Term
Increased Velocity of water has what effect on pressure loss?
Definition
It(pressure loss) increases as velocity increases.
Term
Factors that cause pressure loss
Definition
  • length of pipe
  • number of fixtures
  • velocity of water
Term
locations to use low angle nozzles
Definition
anywhere that wind may be a problem.
Term

End Suction Centrifugal Pump

Definition
  1. Great at pushing water
  2. Suck at sucking it.
  3. Good when water source is higher than pump.
  4. Generally need to be primed the first time.
  5. water typically enters the pump through a "suction inlet "centered on one side of the pump, and exits at the top.
Term

Turbine Pump

Definition
  • A turbine pump is basically a centrifugal pump mounted underwater and attached by a shaft to a motor mounted above the water.
  • for large parks and golf courses where we are pumping from lakes.
Term

Booster Pump

Definition
  • used to increase the water pressure of water that is already on its way somewhere
  • almost all booster pumps are the "end-suction centrifugal "type.
Term
Floating pump
Definition
  1. simply a submersible pump or a turbine pump that is attached to the bottom of a float.
  2. in a pond or lake
  3. much easier to install than a standard submersible, jet-pump, or turbine
  4. much more energy efficient than an end-suction centrifugal
  5. Floating fountains and pond aerators are another utilization of floating pump technology
Term
Static pressure
Definition

the water pressure when measured with all water flows shut off; no faucets running, ice maker is off, no sprinklers on, nobody taking a shower

Term
Reduced Pressure Backflow Preventer
Definition
  • the standard for commercial irrigation installations
  • made for high-hazard uses
  • The R.P. Unit must be installed 12 inches (300mm) above ground
Term
Dual check backflow preventers
Definition
  • for use with non-toxic materials
Term
Double Check Backflow Preventer
Definition
  • will ALWAYS have two manual valves, one on the inlet and one on the outlet
  • manual valves are used as emergency shut-offs and are also necessary to properly test the operation of the backflow preventer
  • will also have test cocks (small outlets sticking out of the side of the backflow preventer) for connecting to test gauges
  • AWWA (American WaterWorks Assoc.)"double checks may be used for sprinkler irrigation systems, provided no chemicals are injected into the sprinkler water"
Term
Pressure Vacuum Breaker
Definition
  • you only need to install one of them and it is installed on the mainline leading to the control valves
  • Like the AVB it must also be installed above ground and it must be 6 inches (150mm) higher than the highest sprinkler head or drip emitter controlled by any of the valves.
Term
Atmospheric Vacuum breaker
Definition
  • the least expensive backflow preventer
  • AVB is installed on the pipe right after the control valve.
  • for backflow prevention you must install one AVB after EVERY control valve, no exceptions
  • It must be installed at least 6 inches (150mm) higher than the highest sprinkler head, bubbler, or drip emitter outlet that is turned on and off by that control valve
Term
Anti-Siphon Valve
Definition
  • a manual or automatic control valve with a built-in atmospheric vacuum breaker
  • Like the AVB it must be installed 6 inches  higher than the highest sprinkler head or drip emitter outlet.
  • Anti-siphon valves are the most common type of backflow preventer used on residential irrigation systems
  • Never install a anti-siphon valve upstream of any other valve
  • Anti-siphon valves should never be installed below ground
