Term
Name the three types of asexual reproduction used by woody plants:
Definition
stump sprouting, root suckering, and layering
Term

Define this method of asexual reproduction and give a benefit and drawback to it:

Definition

-stump sprouting

-a benefit of it is rapid regeneration of the tree over seed germination

-a drawback is that the trees are more susceptible to rot because of the age of the roots

Term

What type of asexual reproduction does this picture represent?

Definition
root suckering
Term
define layering as a method of vegetative reproduction:
Definition
Layering is the formation of roots from branches that touch the ground while they are still attached to the parent plant.
Term

label the parts of this flower:

Term
define stamen:
Definition
The stamen is the male reproductive part of a flower.  It contains the anther, where the pollen resides, and the filament, which is the stalk for the anther.
Term
define carpel:
Definition

The carpel is the female reproductive part of a flower.  It contains: the stigma-where the pollen is collected

the style-the tube that the pollen travels down after it is collected by the stigma

the ovary-becomes the fruit and contains ovules, which become seeds

Term
define a complete flower:
Definition
A complete flower has all four parts of a flower-the stamen, carpel, sepals, and petals.
Term
define incomplete flower:
Definition
An incomplete flower has one or more parts (stamen, carpel, sepals, petals) missing.
Term
define perfect flower:
Definition
A perfect flower has both a stamen and a carpel.  It can be asepalous or apetalous.
Term
define imperfect flower:
Definition
An imperfect flower is missing either the stamen or carpel.
Term
define a synoecious tree:
Definition
A synoecious tree has all perfect flowers.  American basswood is an example.
Term
define a monoecious tree:
Definition
A monoecious tree has both male and female imperfect flowers.  Oak, birch, and pine are examples.
Term
define a dioecious tree:
Definition
A dioecious tree has either only male or only female imperfect flowers.  Examples include ash and aspen.
Term
define a polygamous tree:
Definition
A polygamous tree includes both perfect and imperfect flowers.  Maples are an example.
Term
define inflorescence:
Definition
An inflorescence is a type of seed head/flower arrangment on a plant.
Term

What type of inflorescence is this?

Definition
raceme inflorescence-it has a central axis with petiolate flowers, and all of the flower pedicels are the same length
Term

What type of inflorescence is this?

Definition
catkin-it is pendulous and has a central axis with a dense cluster of sessile, apetalous unisexual flowers
Term

What type of inflorescence is this?

Definition
cyme-it has a central rachis with a terminal flower and lateral branches below the main flower
Term

What type of inflorescence is this?

Definition
panicle-diffusely branched with many flowers
