Old and New testament scenes, the doors of Bishop Bernward, Hildesheim

Definition

-Contrasts Eve who closed the door of salvation with mary who re-opened it, thus creating the "two eves" mary as the second eve (on p.187 in the textbook)

-Depicts the fall of man and salvation through christ

-I don't remember much about these other than they symbolized for abbot Bernward the evils of women 

-Dramatic continuous narrative

David Composing the Psalms from the vivian bible

Definition
-This painting introduces the psalms and depicts their composer, King David who strangely resembles charles the bald(!)
-Four musicians surround him, he is inside a mandorla, establishing the heavenly realm. Personifications of the virtues fill the four corners.
-His nudity here is not understood in the classical heroic sense but as extreme humility to earn God's favor.
-They presented this image as an example for charles to follow, but they would be dissapinted with charles who later gave away church lands to pay off his supporters.

-columns suggest octagonal structure/baptistry front so as to connect constantine and charlemagne b/c Charlemagne's son Pepin was baptized in Constantine's lateran baptistry

-The Carolingan monestary was a pilgrimage station, religious center and self-sufficient community according to the rule of st. benedict
-The plan from St.Gall reflects the orderly planning already noted in aachen, the ideal church was an asiled basilica
-The plan is logical and functional from the point of view of its intended users, the monks whose lives revolved around the church and cloister

Abbess Hitda and Saint Walpurga from Hitda gospels

Definition
-Monastic women were given more power by ottonian kings, they had some political power and owned property
-Depicts Hitda giving st. walburga a copy of her manuscript 
-The buildings in the background indicate the convent she rules
-Shows her as somewhat equal to the saint, the women are equal in size though the saint is raised
-Elevates hitda, putting a female leader in a powerful position
-The book is filled with unusual paintings that suggest it was intended for private devotions.
(i don't know if that means HITDA'S private devotions or those of the nuns...)

-Otto is flanked on the right by religious figures and bibles and on the left by military figures and swords and lances
-Otto is dressed in imperial purple and looms over elderly advisers and youthful supporters, connects him to older images of power
-Meant to show that Otto is the head of a new christian empires
-Audience was potentiall lay people? The image could be attempting to assert his power to his subjects and those in power directly under him.

-Otto III took it from charlemagne's tomb and German emporers swore their coronation oaths on it.

 -Gold on purple vellum

-Wide golden frame-classicizing element, creating a picture window, however the footstool comes out of the frame-a byzantine aesthetic theory

This building is unimportant and has no symbolism, just some ottonian dudes taking some carolingian ideas and building with balanced east and west ends.

-rough masonry, made of stone=less windows, took inspiration from ravenna

-charlemagne idolized constantine and justinian

-includes "window of appearances" in front of Charlemagne's throne so he can see who is coming

-idea of "divine king" appointed by god introduced here

 -Charlemagne moved political center of western Europe from Rome to Aachen.
