Term

118. Layers of the Atmosphere

Definition

Layers our atmosphere is divided by

We live in the troposphere.

We live in the Troposphere.

Thermosphere satellites are here

Term

119. Changing States of Water

Definition

The stages of what water can change into.

Changing states of water is part of the water cycle.

 Ice is when water freezes

Liquid is when ice melts

Gas Liquid is evaporated

Term

120. Latent Heat

Definition

Energy released or absorbed

Water can experience latent heat in the water cycle.

Evaporation is happens when water experiences lots of heat

Condensation us when water is getting colder because heat is taken away

Term

121. Saturation Point

Definition

A stage where nothing more can be absorbed.

Once a sponge reaches its saturation point you should squeeze it out to be able to absorb more stuff.

Sponge can reach a point where it cant absorb any water

Bread can get to the point where it cant absorb water

Term

122. Relative Humidity

Definition

Amount of water needed for saturation at same temperature.

Theres some relative humidity around my environment which makes the leaves wet.

Dew on leaves

Water droplets on leaves, etc.

Term

123. Hygrometer (sling psychrometer)

Definition

Used to measure relative humidity.

I used a hygrometer to measure how humid it was outside in the morning.

Weather station uses these to help predict humidity

Chance of rain because higher humility

Term

124. Dew Point

Definition

Temperature needed to cool water to turn water vapor into water.

Dew point causes water to form around the outside of your cold glass of water.

Morning grass has this because of the weather outside

Water glass gets cold so makes water on glass

Term

126. Clouds

Definition

Mass of condensed water vapor.

As I look up in the sky I saw some pretty dark clouds which means it might rain.

Stratus cloud

Cumulus cloud

Term

127. Air Mass

Definition

Volume of air of hot or warm temperature and water vapor.

A warm air mass can bring in light rain.

Warm air mass can bring ok weather

Cold air mass can bring pretty bad weather

Term

128. Air Pressure

Definition

Weight of the atmosphere pressing down.

As I go up I started to feel less air pressure.

High air pressure can feel heavy

Low air pressure can feel pretty light

Term

129. Barometer

Definition

Item used to measure air pressure.

As I was going up I used a barometer to measure how much air pressure I was experiencing

Tool

Barometer

Term

130. Wind

Definition

Movement of air.

We use wind to spin windmills/turbines for power.

Global surface winds

Seasonal winds

Term

131. Isobar Map

Definition

A map used to show pressure.

We use a isobar map to help predict weather.

High pressure fair weather

Low pressure stormy weather

Term

132. Factors affecting winds

Definition

Factors that will alter winds

There are many factors that affect winds which can make it go east, west, etc.

Coriolis effect

Earth's rotation

Term

133. Condensation Nuclei

Definition

Small particle where water vapor condenses

After leaving some ocean water in a cup out condensation nuclei occured and left some sea salt.

Sea salt come from evaporated salt water

Small soil has water condensed from inside of it

Term

134. Cyclones

Definition

System of rotating winds.

Where I was living we experienced some cyclones so winds there were pretty brutal.

Great Bhola Cyclone

Counterclockwise spin

Term

135. Anticyclones

Definition

Weather system with high pressure in the center.

Anticylones usually brings up pretty nice days.

Calm weather

Clockwise spin

Term

136. Cold Front

Definition

Leads a cooler mass of air

We had pretty gloomy weather after experiencing a cold front

Windy and really bad weather weather

Blue with triangles on map

Term

137. Warm Front

Definition

Leads a warm air mass

After having a warm front we experienced pretty mild weather

Mild weather

Red with circles on map

Term

138. Stationary Front

Definition

A event where air masses reach a stalemate and they are stuck

During a stationary front neither cold air or warm air gets pass.

Trench warfare stalemate

People with same strength arm wrestling

Term

139. Occluded Front

Definition

When a cold front overtakes a warm front

If there's a occluded front expect some bad weather

Storms

Winds

Term

140. More Factors Affecting Winds

Definition

Drift

Friction

Fronts

Term

141. El Nino

Definition

Climatic changes

We've been experiencing el nino lately

Rain

Melting snow

Term

142. La Nina

Definition

Cooler water temperature

If I went to a beach I would want my water to feel like La Nina

Cool water

Cool tongue

Term

143. Doppler Effect

Definition

Increase in sound, etc. waves

After turning up my music I started the doppler effect

Increasing volume

Increasing vibrations

Term

144. Ozone Layer

Definition

Layer in earth's atmosphere that absorbs UV rays.

The ozone layer helps protect us from the full sun rays

Stratosphere is where it's located

UV ray sponge

Term

145. Greenhouse Effect

Definition

Where thermal radiation gets absorbed and reflecting

We should stop the greenhouse effect because it could harm us and the environment

Mirror

Reflection

Term

146. Global Warming
