  4. ((BTU/HR output)/33,475)
Term

How often Must a Boiler be inspected?

Definition
  • All boiler operating over 15 PSI unless otherwise exempted shall be inspected internally and externally once a year
Term

How do you Blow down a Boiler?

Definition
  • Find true water level (1/2 gauge glass or better)
  • Open cooling water to blowdown tank
  • Open quick opening Valve (inside Valve)
  • Open Slow opening Valve (outside Valve) fully wide and Close it
  • Close Quick opening valve
  • Check level and secure cooling water to blow down tank
Term

When is more than one steam stop valve required?

Definition
  • When there is 2 or more boilers on a common header and if the boiler has Man holes and hand holes
Term
How do you blow down a water colunm and gauge glass?
Definition
  • The water column is blow down opening the drain valve fully wide then closing it...Disable low water cut off to avoid tripping boiler
  • The gauge glass needs to be blown down by operating the top and bottom valves independently to ensure that neither connection is plugged
Term

When is more than 1 bottom blow down valve required?

Definition
  • 2 or more Blow down valves are required when the boiler is operating at 100 psi and above

Term
What is the purpose of a main steam stop valve?
Definition
  • The main steam stop valve is used to isolate the boiler from other boilers on a common header usaully for cleaning, repair, and/or Inspection
Term

GATE VALVE

Definition
  • A Gate Valve is an isolation valve used either fully open or fully closed, not designed to use for throttling applications

Term

GLOBE VALVE

Definition
  • A Globe Valve is an Isolation valve that is designed for throttling applications
Term
  • If there is only one safety valve on a boiler, What is it set at?
Definition

  • If there is only one safety valve on the Boiler than it will set at or below Maximum Working Pressure
Term
What Adjustment can be made to a safety valve by any one other than the manufacturer?
Definition

NONE

Term

Why is the superheater safety valve set to open first?

Definition
  • The Super heater safety valve blow first to asure flow thru Superheater
Term

What is an economizer?

Definition
  • An Economizer is heat recovery equipment Designed to add heat to the incoming feed water by reducing the exiting flu gas temperature
Term

What is a PRE-Heater?

Definition
  • An Air Preheater is heat recovery equipment designed to add heat to the incoming combustion air by reducung the exiting flu gas temperature
Term
What is the diffrence between an open feew water heater and a closed feed water heater?
Definition
  • In an Open feed water heater, Steam and water come in deirect contact with each other
  • In a closed feed water heater steam and water do not come in direct contact with each other
Term

What is sensible heat?

Definition
  • Sensible heat is heat added to a substance that cause a change in temperature that can be measured with a thermometer
Term

What is Latent heat?

Definition
  • Latent Heat is heat that is added to a substance that causes a change of state with out change in temerature
Term

What is the definition of a BTU?

Definition

BTU

(British Thermal Unit)

  • The amount of heat needed to raise the temp of one lbs of water one degree fahrenheit

Term
What is the diffrence between saturated steam and Super heated steam?
Definition
  • Saturated steam is steam with same temperature as the water from which it was generated
  • Super heated steam is steam at a temperature higher that temperature corresponding to its pressure
  • Saturated steam is dry steam with no moisture in it
Term

What is the definition of boiler heating surface?

Definition

  • The surface for the absorption and transfer of heat from one medium to another.
Term

What happens to the saturation point once the boiler pressure starts to rise?

Definition

  • As boiler pressure increases the saturation point of the water decreases
Term

Three Things that a Deaerator does?

Definition
  • Removes oxygen and Non-combustible gases
  • Heats the Feed water
  • Acts as storage capacity for the system

  • i.e........Check water levels in Boilers and all other AUX equipment
Term

What the difference between an HRT and a Scotch-Marine Boiler?

Definition

  • An HRT Boiler is externally fired, the Scotch-Marine is internally fired
Term

What does a steam Trap do?

Definition

  • Steam traps are automatic devices that increase the overall plant efficiency by removing air and water from steam lines with out the loss of steam
Term

What is an inverted bucket trap do?

Definition

  • As steam flows in to the valve the bucket rises and trap steam and non condensible gases in side, as condensate fills the trap the bucket loses buouyancy and open valve and releses condesate
