Term
Temporalis Muscle
Definition
    1. Origin: temporalis fossa
    2. Insertion:
      1. coronoid process,
      2. the anterior border of the ramus of the mandible
    3. Innervation:deeptemporal branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
    4. Function:
      1. closes the jaw
      2. the posterior portion retracts the mandible
Term
Masseter M.
Definition
    1. Origin:
      1. inferior margin and deep surface of the zygomatic arch
      2. zygomatic process of maxilla
    2. Insertion: angle and ramus of the mandible
    3. Innervation: mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
    4. Function: closes the jaw
Term
Lateral Pterygoid M.
Definition
    1. Origin:
      1. superior head - infratemporal surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone;
      2. inferior head - lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
    2. Insertion:
      1. neck of the mandible,
      2. articular capsule and disc of the temporomandibular joint
    3. Innervation: mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
    4. Function:
      1. protrudes the mandible
      2. moves mandible from side to side
Term
Medial Pterygoid M.
Definition
    1. Origin: medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
    2. Insertion: medial surface of the ramus and angle of the mandible
    3. Innervation: mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
    4. Function:
      1. closes the jaw;
      2. acting alone it pulls the chin to the opposite side;
      3. when acting alternately it cause grinding
Term
Facial A. (chief artery of the face)
Definition
  1. Facial artery: Moore calls it the “chief artery of the face”
    1. Crosses the inferior mandible just anterior to the masseter
    2. Usually grooves bone; can feel pulse here
    3. Crosses mandible, buccinator, maxilla
    4. Runs deep to zygomaticus major and reaches the eye
Term
Superficial Temporal A.
Definition
    1.   Begins deep to the Parotid gland, behind the neck of the mandible
    2.   Ascends superficial to the zygomatic process
    3.   Ends in the scalp
    4. Branch - Transverse Facial artery:
      1. Arises from the superficial temporal artery deep to Parotid gland
      2. Emerges from the Parotid gland
      3. Crosses face superficial to the masseter muscle
      4. Supplies masseter, Parotid gland and duct
Term

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

  1. modified hinge joint
  2. articular surfaces:
    1. _____
    2. _____
  3. oval fibrocartilaginous disc divides joint into _____ and _____ compartments
Definition

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

  1. modified hinge joint
  2. articular surfaces:
    1. head or condyle of mandible
    2. articular tubercle and mandibular fossa of squamous part of temporal bone
  3. oval fibrocartilaginous disc divides joint into superior and inferior compartments

Term

Tempormandibular Joint:

  1. disc is fused with capsule
  2. capsule is loose
  3. disc is more firmly attached to mandible and slides anteriorly with mandible when jaw is opened
  4. capsule is thickened laterally by _____

Definition
  1. disc is fused with capsule
  2. capsule is loose
  3. disc is more firmly attached to mandible and slides anteriorly with mandible when jaw is opened
  4. capsule is thickened laterally by lateral ligament
Term

Temporomandibular joint:

  1. two other ligaments connect mandible to cranium - not strong:
    1. _____ ligament: thickened band of deep cervical fascia from styloid process to angle of mandible
    2. _____ ligament: remnant of 1st branchial arch cartilage from spine of sphenoid bone to lingula of mandible

Definition
  1. two other ligaments connect mandible to cranium - not strong:
    1. stylomandibular ligament: thickened band of deep cervical fascia from styloid process to angle of mandible
    2. sphenomandibular ligament: remnant of 1st branchial arch cartilage from spine of sphenoid bone to lingula of mandible
Term

Two movements during opening of jaw:

  1. _____: occurs in upper cavity of joint
  2. _____: occurs in lower cavity of joint
  3. During protrusion and retrusion:

head and articular disc slide anteriorly and posteriorly

both sides move together in grinding fashion

Definition

Two movements during opening of jaw:

  1. anterior gliding - Magee: occurs in upper cavity of joint
  2. hinge-like rotation - Magee: occurs in lower cavity of joint
  3. During protrusion and retrusion:

head and articular disc slide anteriorly and posteriorly

both sides move together in grinding fashion
