Term
Space Planning
Definition
the organization of mojor rooms and areas, determining circulation systems, and layout of furniture.
Term
concept development
Definition
based on programmatic needs; develops an overall direction for subsequent work.
Term
Aspects of existing conditions that can influence the space plan of an interior design project.
Definition
1.Relationship to surrounding areas.
2.Size of existing space
3.Views
4.Special features
5.Structural considerations
6.Plumbing
Term
Wet columns
Definition
structural columns that are placed away from the core of the building next to which water supply pipes and drains are located to make it easier to tap into as required for tenant finish work.
Term
Four basic organizing concepts that are used to begin space planning
Definition
1. linear
2. axial
3. grid
4. central
Term
Linear organization
Definition
consists of a series of spaces or rooms that are placed on a single line. always relate to a unifying line, usually a path of circulation. can be straight, bent, or curved to work within an existing architectural space.
Term
Axial organization
Definition
have two or more major linear segments about which spaces or rooms are placed. usually have a featured termination at one or more ends of the axis, or the axis is a major design element in itself.
Term
Grid systems
Definition
consist of two sets of spaced elements. may be regularly spaced and perpendicular to each other or irregularly space and at angles to each other or to the architectural space.
Term
Central organization
Definition
based on one space or point about which secodary elements are placed. usually very formal, and inherently places the primary emphasis on the central space. when more than one linear organization extends from a centralized point, it becomes a radial organization. have a central focus, but also extend outward to connect with other spaces or rooms.
Term
Linear dumbell
Definition
simplest and most flexible; spaces are laid out along a straight path that connects two major elements at the ends. usually the entrance to the space at one end and an exit or other access point at the other, although the primary entrance can occur anywhere along the path.
Term
Double-loaded corridor
Definition
most efficient way of space planning in which roooms are contained on both sides of a common corridor.
Term
Doughnut configuration
Definition
when making a complete loop with a circulation pattern. provides double-loaded corridors, and autimatically makes a continuous exitway so two exits are always available if required by building codes.
Term
building code in commercial construction
Definition
having at least two paths to an exit, teh ends of the linear routes extending from the central space must lead to an exit or loop around to the central space. However, if the building code allows dead-end corridors not exceeding 20 feet, a short corridor does not have to terminate in an exit.
Term
Space planning involves three major elements
Definition
1. individual pieces of furniture
2. space around them
3. access points to get to the grouping
Term
Building code requirements for corridors
Definition
1. required # of exits from individual rooms adn from the entire space. smaller rooms & nonassembly spaces usually require only one exit door. larger, two.
2. if two exits are required they must be separated by a distance of at least one half of the diagonal distance of the room or area they serve.
3. exit doors minimum of three feet
4. minimum corridor width is 36" for residential construction and 44" for commercial. most cases you want to use 48 to 60.
Term
accessible residential toilet room
Definition
will require 70 to 100 sq. ft if you have to provide for a 5' diameter turning radius.
Term
closets calculated
Definition
by multiplying a 2-foot depth by the lineal footage of storage in the program.
Term
once required usable area is calculated you must
Definition
add another 25% for wall thickness and hallways within the residential portion to come up with the total area.
Term
Note/checklist to show on plan for the practicum
Definition
1.all exit doors swing in direction of travel
2. draw required grab bars in rest rooms
3. draw 5' turning radius in hallways where direction changes, and in restrooms
4. note partition types. use partitions with water-resistant gyp board in wet areas, as bathrooms, and full-height, insulated walls where accoustical separation is required. note fire-rated partitions as well.
5. show upper cabinets on drawings
6. make notes as required.
