Definition

Levodopa= works as the L-dopa intermediate and is made into dopamine presynaptic neuron.  Can cross the BBB.

Carbidopa= Makes it so more Levodopa gets into the blood and less is metabolised.

Term
What is the mechanism of Pramipexole?
Definition

Dopamine receptor agonist

given orally

Term
What is the mechanism of ropinirole?
Definition

dopamine receptor agonist

given orally

Term

Definition

dopamine receptor agonist

transdermal patch.

Term
What are adverse effects of dopamine agonists?
Definition
urge to gamble and fuck, also nausea, vomiting , halleucinations, HTN,
Term
What is the mechanism of Rasagiline and Selegiline?
Definition
MAO-B inhibitors.  MAO-B breaks down Dopamine.  Reduces ROS and may slow progression.
Term
What happens if u take too much tyramine with an MAO inhibitor.
Definition
"cheese reaction" NE accumulates in synaptic vessicles.
Term
What are some side effects of Selegiline?
Definition
gets converted in methamphetamine and amphetamine so you want to give early in the day, morning and noon.
Term
You cannot give _____ with MAO inhibitors or you will get a serotonin syndrome.
Definition
Meperidine
Term

What is the mechanism of Entacapone and what is it used for?

Definition

Inhibits COMT (Catechol-O-Methyltransferase)

Increases prenetrability of BBB which extends the half life of levodopa.  Used to treat the wearing off of levodopa.  Only used with Levodopa.

Term

What is Dyskinesia?

When does it occur?

how is it managed?

Definition

weakened motor control

wearing off levodopa

add a dopamine agonist reduce levodopa ammounts.

Term
What is the mechanism of Amantadine?
Definition
reduces levodopa induced dyskinesia. antiviral agent used to treat influenza also
Term
What is the mechanism of Benzotropine?
Definition

effective for parkinson patients bothered by tremors.  Given to people under 50.

Causes constipation and dry mouth.

Term

What is the mechanism of Apomorphine?

Definition
dopamine receptor agonist that is injected in emergency situations.
Term
What drugs can induce parkinsons?
Definition

Dopamine receptor blocking drugs

Typical neuroleptic antipsychotic drugs

Antidopaminergic antiemetics

Term
What is the most common initial treatment for parkinsons?
Definition
Levodopa with carbidopa
Term
Who is the "second victim" in medical errors?
Definition
the doctor or nurse who made the error.
Term
