Aminoglycosides

Streptomycin

 Definition

Bacterialcidal. Binds to 163 rRNA  of 30S ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis.

 

When combined with penicillin, cell wall is altered by penicillin, allowing aminoglycosides to penetrate cell wall. Alternate for ghonorrhea.

 

Adverse affects: Ototoxicity & Renal Toxicity

Blocks translation by binding to 23S subunit of 50S ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis.  

Good for patients allergic to penicillin.
