Term
What is the sclera?
Definition
The tough, fibrous white outer coating of the eye
Term
What are the functions of the sclera?
Definition
Protection of the eyeball

Along with the cornea, it provides the eye's shape

By being opaque, it excludes stray light

Provides a smooth surface for the retina inside & a place for attachment of the extrinsic muscles on the outside
Term
What is the cornea?
Definition
The transparent outer cover at the front of the eye. It is comprised of the five layers
Term
What is the Cornea diopters and index?
Definition
45D

N = 1.376
Term
What are the five layers of the cornea from outside to inside?
Definition
Epithelium

Bowman's membrane

Stroma or substantia propria (90% of the corneal thickness)

Descemet's membrane

Endothelium
Term
What is the conjunctiva?
Definition
A vascular membrane that lines the eyelids & the front of the globe, excluding the cornea
Term
What is the iris
Definition
The colored portion of the eye located behind the sclera & in front of the lens. By opening & closing it regulates the size of the pupil and thereby regulates the amount of light that enters the eye. Controlled by the sphincter and dilator muscles within the iris
Term
What is the crystalline lens
Definition
A transparent, biconvex body located between the vitreous humor and the iris. Posterior is more convex.
Term
What is the index of the crystalline lens?
Definition
N = 1.42
Term
What is the ciliary body?
Definition
An extension of the choroid at the end of the retina to the base of the iris. It consists of the ciliary processes, Which produces the aqueous humor, and the ciliary muscle, which controls the process of accommodation. The muscle is connected to the lens by small ligaments called the zonules of Zinn of the suspensory ligaments
Term
What is the choroid?
Definition
The vascular coat of the eye. The second coat of the eye, located between the sclera and the retina, it is responsible for supplying the nutrition to the rest of the eye
Term
What is the anterior chamber?
Definition
A space in the front of the eye that is formed between the cornea and the iris. It is filled with aqueous humor. POSTERIOR chamber. A small space between the iris and the lens that is also filled with aqueous humor
Term
What is aqueous humor>
Definition
A transparent liquid that is actually a blood filtrate supplied by the ciliary processes. It circulates front he posterior chamber through the pupil, into the anterior chamber and finally exits through the canal of Schlemm. This is a circular canal at the sclera/corneal junction. N = 1.337, virteous humor: N = 1.337. A transparent jelly-like substance that comprises 4/5 ths of the eye's volume. Like the aqueous, it provides little refractive power
Term
What is the index of the sclera/corneal junction?
Definition
N = 1.337
Term
What is the retina?
Definition
The delicate innermost layer of the eye that is composed of the nerve fibers (rods/cones) that are responsible for light perception.

Macula an area of distinct vision on the retina that surrounds the forvea centralis.
Term
What is the most distinct area of vision?
Definition
The fovea centralis
Term
What are the rods responsible for?
Definition
Rods are responsible for our vision in low light conditions (black/white) and peripheral vision
Term
Rods contain what kind of chemical that is responsible for night vision?
Definition
Rhodopsin or visual purple
Term
What are cones responsible for?
Definition
Cones are responsible for color vision, central vision
Term
What is the optic disc (optic nerve head)?
Definition
Where optic nerve meets with the retina. There is NO vision in this spot (scotoma)
Term
What is the central retinal artery and vein?
Definition
Carries blood to and from the eye. They enter eye in the area of the optic nerve
