Term

List the Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Agents

(Beta-Blockers)

Definition

Acebutolol

Atenolol

Esmolol

Metoprolol

Nadolol

Propanolol

Timolol

Term

What beta blockers are cardio-selective?

Definition

Acebulolol

Atenolol

Esmolol

 Metoprolol

Term

Which beta blockers are both beta1 and beta 2 blockers?

 (Non selective)

Definition

Nadolol

Pindolol

Propranolol

Timolol

Term
Which of the beta blockers are also partial agonists?
Definition

Acebutolol

Pindolol

**Sometimes referred to as having Intrinsic Symp Activity (ISA)

Term
Which Beta-blockers are membrane Stabilizing?
Definition

Acebutolol

Proranolol

**Local Anasthetic Action.  Only seen at high concentrations

Term

Which of the beta blockers have a high lipid solubility?

Medium solubility?

Low lipid Solubility?

Definition

High-Propranolol

Medium-Metoprolol, Pindolol

Low-Atenolol, Esmolol, Nadolol

High Lipid Solubility-->more likely to enter the brain and cleared by liver

Lower lipid solubility--> less likely to enter Brain, and will be excreted by kidneys

**Esmolol is short acting because it is rapidly inactivated by esterases

Term
Which beta blocker is also an Alpha blocker?
Definition

Labetalol

  • non selective B and selective A blocker
  • used to treat moderate to severe primary hypertension (orally) and EMERGENCY treatment of hypertensive crisis (IV)
  • Treatment caused arterial pressure to fall
  • little aggravation of Raynaud's disease

Term
What are the main pharmacological properties of Beta Blockers?
Definition
  • competetive antagonists for B1 receptors
  • cardioselective- only block B1
  • Nonselective-block B1 and B2 (relative term)
  • At high doses, all beta blockers may block B1 AND B2.
  • Intrinsic Sypmathetic and/or sympathomimetic activity (ISA)--> those that are also partial agonists
  • Stabilize cell membrane-->local anasthetic
  • high lipid solubility=enters brain, cleared by liver
Term
what makes Esmolol special?
Definition
Rapidly inactivated by circulating Esterases (short duration of action)
Term
Describe Labetal
Definition

Non selective Beta Blocker, and selective Alpha1-Blocker.

Treats Moderate-high Hypertension (Orally)

Treats emergency Hypertensive Crisis (IV)

Side effects: Alpha blockade (ortho. hypotension)

Beta blockade (bronchoconstriction)

LESS effect on Raynaud's Disease

LESS Tachycardia
