Lateral (pitch) axis

 

Definition
It is controlled by the elevator. This rotation is referred to as longitudinal control or longitudinal stability. "Front Flip"

Longitudinal (roll) axis
Definition
Imaginary line from the nose to the tail. The "roll" is controlled by the ailerons. The rotation is referred to as lateral control or lateral stability. "Plane turning over on its back"

Definition
  • Imaginary line extending vertically through the intersection of the lateral and longitudinal axes.
  • Yaw is controlled by the rudder. This rotation is referred to as directional control or directional stability.
