- 10-30% of all babies in the US develop colic
- one of the most common complaints for which parents seek medical assistance

Definition
- loud, high-pitched, intense, piercing, angry scream, accompanied by breath holding
- often arching of the back, extending or pulling up the legs, or other agitated motor movements
- an enlarged stomach, increased bowel sounds, spitting up, & difficulty sleeping
- starts @ about 2 weeks old, can persist up to 4 months or longer

- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
- the sudden death of any infant under 1 yr of age that can't be explained by medical history, a complete autopsy, & examination of death scene

- exposure to tobacco smoke before/after birth
- more frequent among economically disadvantaged families
- highest in firstborn infants
- preterm, low birth weight, and infants of multiple births
- mothers are >20 yrs old, inadequate prenatal care, substance abuse, short interval between pregnancies
- high among male infants than female
- significant increase w/ children who sleep on stomach (for breathing/suffocation reasons while not being able to move or roll themselves over)
