A neurone cell body contains
Definition
Large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum to produce neurotransmitters
Term
A neurones dendrons
Definition
carry nerve impulses
Term
An axon
Definition
Carries nerve impulses
Term
Schwann cells
Definition
surround the axon, protecting it and performing phagocytosis to break down cell debris. Also regenerate it
Term
Myelin sheath
Definition
Insulates part of the axon, made of schwann cells, forces saltatory conduction to poccur
Term
Nodes of Ranvier
Definition
Gaps in myelin sheath
Term
How does an impulse pass from a neurone to a muscle?
Definition
The action potential causes voltage gated calcium ion channels to open, causing calcium to move into the presynaptic knob. The calcium binds to receptors in the presynaptic knob, causing vesicles filled with acetylcholine molecules to fuse with the presynaptic membrane, releasing acetylcholing into the synaptic cleft. The acetylcholing binds to receptors in the neuromuscular junction, causing sodium ion channels to open, creating an action potential. This opens calcium ion channels, allowing calcium ions stored in the sarcoplasmic reticulum to diffuse into the muscle cytoplasm. The calcium ions bind to troponin on the actin, displacing the tropomysosin and allowing myosin heads to attach to the actin. The myosin heads can then pull forwards, before ATP binds to them, forcing them to be released. ATPase then breaks down the ATP into ADP + P and the resulting energy is enough to bring the myosin head back to the starting position.
Term
Adaptions for slow-twitch fibres.
Definition
Lots of myoglobin to store oxygen
Lots of glycogen for energy
Lots of capilleries to take away products and bring reactants
Lots of mitochondria
Term
Adaptions for fast-twitch fibres
Definition
More myosin filaments
High concentration of enzymes involved in anaerobic respiration
A store of phosphocreatine so ATP can be readily generated
