Doubt/Denial verbs: subjunctive in noun clause

  • one of basic functions of subj. is to express doubt or uncertainty.
  • used w/ verbs: dudar(doubt) and negar(deny) How are these used: e.g. affirmative/negative
  • used w/verbs: pensar and creer

Definition

for affirmative (non-no): subjunctive tense used

EX: Dudamos que lo sepa.::We doubt that he knows it.

 

for negative (no): indicative usually used

EX:

No duda que lo tengo.::She doesn't doubt that I have it.

For affirmative (non-no): indicative used

EX: Creo que tiene razo'n.::I believe he is right.

For negative (no): subjunctive used

Ex: No creemos que tenga razo'n.::We don't believe he is right?

Impersonal expressions: subj. in noun clause

  • subj. used after almost all imper. expres.(It is+adjective)
  • if there is no dependent clause, infinitive used.
  • imp. expr. denoting certainty take indicative in affirmative BUT subj. when neg. or interrogative.

Es probable que llueva.::It is probable that it will rain.

Es interesante que nadie la conozca.::It is interesting that nobody knows her.

No es cierto que nos lo devuelvan.::It isn't certain that they will return it to us.

Volition : subj. in noun clauses

  • volition=wish, want, request, permission, etc.
  • commands in comp. sent.
  • mainly w/ querer, desear, preferir
  • If there is no change in subject, verbs followed by infinitive.
  • w/ hacer, mandar, dejar, permitir, aconsejar, impedir, & prohibir, can be followed by infinitive especially if there is a pronoun in 2nd part.
  • w/ decir & other communication verbs, they are followed by subj. when command & indic. for statement

 

Definition

EX: Quiero que Ud. hable.::I want you to speak.

Ex: Prefiero que e'l lo haga.::I prefer that he do it.

Ex: No quiero hacerlo.::I don't want to do it.

EX: No quiero que Ud. lo haga.:: I don't want you to do it.

 EX: No nos permiten fumar.::They don't allow us to smoke.

EX:Me dice que venga a las tres.::She tells (orders) me to come at 3 o'clock.

EX:Me dice que viene a las tres.::She tells me that she is coming at 3 o'clock.

    • alegrarse, esperar,gustar,etc.
  • If no change in subject, the infinitive is normally used.
  • esperar and temer may be followed by indicative when there is certainty in mid of speaker.
