Term
ions
Definition

Anions

Cations are the positively charged ions

are the negatively charged ions.

An atomic number

is the number of protons in an atom / number of electrons in a neutral atom.

Isotopes

have the same number of protons (or electrons) but different neutron numbers

Valence of an atom

Mass number of an atom equals the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.

is the bonding capacity of that atom.

Term
ph
Definition

  • pH is a measure of the acidity or the basicity of a solution, or a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution (or –log H+).
  • The pH of the body has to be within a certain range for the body to maintain homeostasis. This is done by the buffering systems in the body. The buffering systems resist any change in the pH of the body fluid by converting strong acids or bases into weak acids or bases. These buffering systems are made from weak acids and their salts. The common body buffers are bicarbonate, phosphate, and protein buffers.
  • low ph too much hydrogen
