Indications: Treatment of CHF. Tachyarrhythmias: atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter


Action: Increased cardiac output and slowing of the heart rate.


Major Side Effects: arrythmias, fatigue, bradycardia, NVD

Indications: long term prophylatic managment of angina pectoris, treatment of CHF and acute MI.


Action: relief or prevention of anginal attacks. Increased cardiac output. Reduction of blood pressure.


Major Side Effects: dizziness, HA, hypotension, tachycardia.

Classification: Anticoagulants


Indications: Prophylaxis and treatment of various, thromboembolic disorders including: Venous thromboembolism, pulmonary emboli, atrial fibrillation w/embolization.


Action: prevention of thrombus formation.


Major Side Effects: bleeding, anemia, thrombocytopenia

Definition

Classification: allergy cold and cough remedies, bronchodilators


Indications: maintenance therapy of reversible airway obstruction due to COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema


Action: bronchodilation without systemic anticholinergic effects. decreased rhinorrhea


Major Side Effects: dizziness, HA, blurred vusion, sore throat, hypotension, palpitations

Indications: maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylatic therapy.


Action: decreased frequency and severity of asthma attacks. improves asthma symptoms.

Definition

Classification: vasodilator


Indications: acutely decompensated CHF in hospitalized patients who have dyspnea at rest or with minimal activity; has been used w/ digoxin, diuretics and ace inhibitors.


Action: dose-dependent reduction in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and systemic arterial pressure in patients with heart failure


Major Side Effects: Apnea, hypotension, anxiety

Classification: antiplatlet agent


Indications: reduction of atherosclerotic events in patients at risk for such events including recent MI, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease.


Action: decreased occurrence of atherosclerotic events in patients at risk. 


Major Side Effects: bleeding, neutropenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

Classification: Anti-infectives, antiprotozoals, antiulcer agent


Indications: treatment of intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infection, skin and skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, CNS infections.


Action: bactericidal, trichomonacidal, or amebicidal action


Major Side Effects: seizures, dizziness, HA, abdominal pain, anorexia

Indications: maintenance of healing in erosive esophagitis, duodenal ulcers, heartburn, benign gasatric ulcer


Action: diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen w/lessened gastroesophageal reflux, healing of deudenal ulcers


Major Side Effects: abdonimal pain, dizziness, chest pain

Definition

Classification: antiulcer agent, Histamine H2 antagonist


Indications: short-term treatment of active duofenal ulcers and benign gastric ulcer, managment of GERD, treatment of heartburn, acid indigestion


Action: healing and prevention of ulcers, decreased symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux. decreased secretion of gastric acid


Major Side Effects: confusion, arrhythmias, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis

Classification: antiulcer agent


Indications: management of metabolic acidosis, used in alkalinize urine and promote excretion of certain drugs in overdosing situations.


Action: alkalinization, neutralization of gastric acid


Major Side Effects: metabolic alkalosis, gastric distention, hypernatremia, hypokalemia, hyopcalcemia

Indications: prevention of chemotherapy-induced emesis, treatment of postsurgical and diabetic gastric stasis.managment of esophageal reflux. treatmetn of postoperative nausea vomiting


Action: decreased nausea and vomiting, decreased symptoms of gastric stasis. easier passage of nasogastric tube into small bowel.


Major Side Effects: drowsiness, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, restlessness, extrapyramidal reactions.

Classification: Antiemetic


Indications: prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy, prevention of postoperative NV


Action: decreased incidence and serverity of nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy or surgery


Major Side Effects: HA, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue

Definition

Classification: mineral and electrolyte replacement/supplements, laxative


Indications: treatment /prevention of hypomagnesemia, bowel evacuant in preparation for surgical/radiographic precedures. milk of magnesia has also been used as an antacid


Action: replacement in deficiency states. Evacuation of the colon.


Major Side Effects: diarrhea, flushing, sweating

Indications: relief of painful symptoms of excess gas in the GI tract that may occur postoperativly or as a conquence of peptic ulcer, dyspepsia, diverticullitits


Action: passage of gas through the GI tract by belching or passing flatus
